Free on Kindle: A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton
A Kiss of Shadows
by Laurell K. Hamilton http://www.amazon.com/A-Kiss-of-Shad.../dp/B000FC1IZE It looks like it's paranormal/dark fantasy, and reviews seem to indicate it may fall into erotica. Who knows... enjoy, if you want. Last edited by BookishMom; 11-02-2009 at 12:45 AM. |

Yes, her books are somewhat erotic, as you suggest - soft porn to titillate a certain demographic. As you say, "enjoy, if you want." Don |

A Kiss of Shadows is first in the Merry Gentry series, and has an erotica level about equal to books 5-8 of her Anita Blake series. Later Merry Gentry books pick up the pace a bit. Which is great if you like erotica, and more than a bit daunting if you don't.
Other than sex involving a fairy princess and a handful of warrior-fey men, there's Seelie/Unseelie Sidhe politics, several varieties of monsters, mild BDSM, some murder attempts, hardcore polyamory, interspecies squabbling & negotiations, and tentacles. I am firmly in favor of all these things in books, and am impatiently waiting for book 8 to come out this December. |

The only book I read by this author had not much erotica, but the erotic parts had a definite S/M tendency. It would have been bearable if the main character didn't take so much pain in explaining how disgusting she found it. Rather hypocritical and distasteful. Just my personal opinion of course.

The first few of her Anita Blake books were interesting-- I liked the character, I liked the setting, and the plots. But over the next few, they became nothing but hard-core porn-- and Anita stopped being interesting, the setting stopped being interesting, and the plots stopped being interesting. I stopped reading them entirely after book 8. There is some entertainment in reading some of the tons of 1-star reviews of her later books on Amazon, though.

I just read the book (courtesy of the free download) and I have to say, there's a lot less sex than everyone made it out to have. It's actually less than in quite a few of the other PNRs that I've read. I wonder if the reason there such vociferous objections to it is that it is not monogamous sex? I can only think of about 5 or 6 sex scenes in the whole 500 or so page book, but each one of those scenes involves a different partner with the lead character and this seems to be a hot button issue for quite a few people.
After a bit of a slow start, I tore through the rest of the book and have already purchased the second to read, so if you are interested, don't let the negative reviews put you off unless you don't like books with multiple sex partners - that is definitely an integral part of the book and you are unlikely to enjoy it if you aren't okay with that. |

I like both of the series (mostly), especially the early books, all the way up to her discovery of BDSM in the Anita Black series - that book I didn't like much and the next few are a bit over the top, until the last one. I'm not sure you'd miss anything if you skipped over the series at that point and took up with the latest one. For the Meredith series, I suspect it's all a bit more tame (although, again, there are multiple partners and it's extra men, not women, and, as you mentioned, I think that turns off some).
With the Meredith series, I think the weirdness level gets up there when one has tentacles... |

2) It's fairly tame... in the first book. 3) In the long run, Anita Blake's bizarre metaphysical sexual emergencies got nothin' on Meredith's. As powerful as Anita gets by the later books, her orgasms don't bend time & space in her local region. |

Well, there is one!
Not as conflicted, of course, as Anita is (which takes more than even two books). Quote:
