We, however (ie MR) are in Canada, not the US. What is the status of such images under Canadian law?

I have a question on the same general subject of this thread. Google has produced and made available hundred of thousands of OCRed PD texts (epubs) that are based on their scanning project. These are fairly rough and require proofreading to meet the standards of an MR upload. Two questions:

1) Can proofread/converted versions of these epubs be legally uploaded to MR?

2) If so, can the Google verbiage from the start and end of the work be removed prior to the upload?

If a book is in the public domain, you can do with it whatever you wish, without restriction, and edit it in any way that you wish.
