Should i wait ? Or is there a device for me ? PDF and alot of Text :D

Hey they,
I am pretty new to this so I just go ahead.

I am looking for a device that can handle PDF well, i got a lot of documentation to read and they are in PDF. Also i get tons of emails and stuff on a normal day and I want a device that can handle that.

I mean, normal day, i turn on my email client programm and get 20 mails and that are often mails with the size of 3 pages.

I want to download them und my device read them in the train or whatever

Also I get a lot of PDFs. Those are often more than 200 Pages. And I dont like reading on the screen at all

I very interested in buying technical books online and read them. I am a software enigineer in training, so i read a lot of books

Is there a device that can help me to read the important things mobile ? Good Quality ?

I was happy to see that Sony is releasing the PSR 600 soon but then I saw a video + review on engadget and it turns out the device is not good...please checkout yourself

Thanks for your help ^^

If it's within your price bracket, the iRex DR1000S would probably be ideal for you. It has the best PDF handling of any current device, and allows you to add your own annotation to PDFs by drawing on the screen with a stylus.

The iRex DR800 is a posibility, see Mainstream iRex 8.1-inch reader for 400$ (rumor). It isn't a rumor any more, but we still don't know much about it.

Hey,
first thanks for your answers. But the iRex is too expensive There is a ereader from Foxit Software. They are PDF specialist. Any experience with this device ? Anyone ?

Is there any release date for the iRex DR800 ? What is coming in the near future ? Sony, Amazon...

Thanks!

I'm afraid if you want a decent device, you should wait. Nothing on the market is good enough for any sort of demanding use. They're just expensive toys...mostly only for reading low quality books. Further, if you get A4 PDFs, don't waste your time with small-screen readers since they don't have sufficient contrast or resolution. Contrary to what some say, e-ink isn't like reading paper. It's more like reading a calculator with slightly higher resolution and contrast.

Unfortunately the best solution for large pdfs that require navigation is still a PC of some sort. A netbook or tablet is a much smarter buy at the moment, and I don't expect any great ebook reader solutions will be available within the next year or two.

I really must disagree. Have you actually used a DR1000S?

That's only true in your mind Mr. Boblo. My DR 1000s gets carted around everywhere I go and continues to display my very art heavy PDF e-books in excellent fashion. Just because you personally dislike e-ink technology, doesn't mean it's bad. It just means that you dislike it.

What kind of PDF files are you talking about MidnightRun? If its just plain text, then the best way would be to copy text into a text file and create another format.

What I do is copy/paste my emails and other stuff I want to take with me on the go and convert them to page/font size that works for my BeBook reader.

Depends on what you want to do with the PDFs. If you don't need to highlight and annotate, and don't use the TOC support, then the Kindle DX is fine; I said fine as my PDF books have a regular content page ala normal paper books, so all I did was do up the pages properly and then set a bookmark in the DX for the PDF so that when I need to go to the content page, I can do so easily via the bookmark.

Of course, I would have loved the ability to highlight and annotate but I am willing to forgo that for a smaller price tag relative to the iRex 1000, and yet have a larger screen of 9.7" as compared to the 6" Sony readers which have the features but lacks the screen asset...

I thought that the Kindle DX did not support hyperlinks in PDF files, so a "contents" page couldn't be used? Please excuse me if this in incorrect.

Nope. That's mostly academic though, since there are plenty of videos that show it in action with various types of files and formats, and of course I needn't say that it uses an e-ink screen.

My opinion is based predominantly on speed and screen quality. I've heard plenty of "well I haven't had a problem with it" excuses from users of just about every maddeningly slow reader device out there, and plenty of "well mine seems fine to me" comments bout all the different mediocre e-ink screens of every shape and size. I've played with a decent number of devices beyond just my especially sluggish prs-505, so that's not my sole point of reference either.

Go ahead and promote the devices...but just ignore me since I haven't personally used your sluggish-but-feature-rich device. Comparing it to slower e-ink devices is a bit unfair...like comparing a sloth to a glacier.

I have considered hooking up an etch-a-sketch to a CNC controller, but it would sacrifice a bit of portability and DRM compatibility.

But if I want expensive toy then do I have to wait?

Absolutely not. I am not giving mine up for a while. Works a treat within its limits and gives me a reason to fart around with the ebooks I have, exercising some of my inner geek. Takes up a lot less room and costs a little less money than printing and binding them...especially considering the number of errors I happen across in my ebooks after typesetting.

I believe it doesn't support links in the PDFs, but the Kindle software will still allow bookmarks to be set for the pages, just like any other ebook it reads.
