http://www.staples.co.uk/SearchEngin...+ereader+touch I paid £62 for mine and they threw in an ice cream maker for free plus free shipping for both. This morning Staples were selling them for £58 but now they have changed the prices back to the RRP of £79. Last edited by Razi; 05-19-2012 at 04:06 PM. |

Thank you for the great feedback!
I would love to consider the Kobo, but they don't sell it where I live (Asia). I have now decided to settle with the Sony. I'm really excited, can't wait to get it. If it wasn't for everyone reassuring me, I probably would have pondered about it for a month so thank you everyone.

When something gets so cheap, it's a sure sign that it's not selling well. The reason that Staples are selling it so cheaply is that pretty much everyone in the UK who wants a reader is buying a Kindle.

My very old Sony PRS-500 still works.
I take my almost-three-years-old PocketBook 360 everywhere with me and it is scratched and battered, but it still works. There are readers without glass-backed display. They are just beginning to sell. See this post http://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...75#post2087175 But, Wexler Flex One will sell for 230Euro. You can buy three Kindles for that price. |

I have heard that Kobo are due to release a new model soon. This thing is half the price of a Kindle Touch with similar functionality. I am perfectly happy with mine and as you know, I am not new to this ereader business.

The current generation are all built with cost in mind. They are built cheap to sell cheap. Do not expect them to last and you won't be disappointed. I do not recommend investing a larger sum expecting longevity. Go cheap and replace frequently. Personally I buy used and refurbished if the the price is right.

The interchangeable comparisons between Sony Readers, Nooks and Kindles make me wonder if the OP has thought carefully about which formats and content purchasing options they prefer. Perhaps those decisions were contemplated and resolved in silence, or perhaps the subjects should be mentioned.
I do prefer the flexibility, openness and ergonomics of the Sony which Keili seems to have chosen. But Harry's correct that Amazon has the best customer service of any of the companies being considered.

Format means nothing to me. I have no problem with removing DRM and converting if need be. The reality, for me, is that I can find the books I want at Amazon for competitive prices. More options in terms of bookstores does not mean more book options. I cn shop at all the indies stores if I want.
So format is not important to me. Heck, how many people here shop at Amazon with EPub readers? I have seen plenty of folks sy that they do. One of the reasons people hack the Nook and Sony is to add the Kindle app so thy can use Amazon's store because they don't want to strip DRM. So format does not seem to be important for many folks at this site. In reality, I would imagine that if you conducted a survey of ereader users a good number of folks might not be able to tell you what format they read in, what DRM is, and that they shop at the bookstore associated with their ereader. IPad users, technically not ereaders, probably use the largest variety of stores due to the apps but probably still do not know about format issues.

One reason that format matters to me because I've paid attention to the results of conversions back and forth, especially the DRM-stripped kind. I've tended to have better results with epub to mobi than the other way around, and I wouldn't be surprised if the same applied to epub 2.0 and Format 8. So far, Apple's ebook format is the most recalcitrant of the lot, but I still have about four Kindle books that will not make the leap -- particularly Charles Bernstein's My Way and The Madman and the Nun and the Crazy Locomotive, by Stanislaw Witkiewicz.
(BTW: Bernstein is a language poet and deliberately employs typos and homonyms to humorous and/or annoying effect. You don't want automatic spell-check anywhere near his books!) Truth told, I also like the aesthetic results of epub to mobi more than mobi to epub. I wish I didn't, since Amazon's the most convenient store of them all.
