CES: Verizon readies for Kindle killers
Full story here --> http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=11393
"Finally, a Verizon executive has hinted that the company is positioned to work with companies who will launch competitors to Amazon’s Kindle this year. Users would be able to download content such as books and newspapers over the wireless network." Also --> http://www.mobileburn.com/news.jsp?Id=5991 Interesting that Verizon's network is being described as "open". With the various cellular technologies currently in use in the USA, can any wireless provider call their network open? Last edited by Elsi; 01-07-2009 at 07:51 PM. |

Open only means that applications crated by someone other than the carrier can be certified to work over the carrier's network. As part of recent bandwidth sales and merger applications, to get FCC approval, carriers have had to agree to open their networks.

It's probably safe to say that Sony is getting a wireless reader (using Verizon's network) ready to rival the Kindle.
I hope they find a wireless provider in Canada because Verizon's network is U.S. only. |

Or maybe that Verizon simply knows Sony is working on a wireless device, and is trying to position themselves as the go-to wireless network for it. Verizon's announcement is a flag in the air, there for anyone to see, but I'd expect they are waving it particularly energetically in Sony's direction.
