Hi Kevin

Has she tried the Stephen Leather's Jack Nightingale series? Jack is a police negotiator who gets mixed up in some seriously paranormal shenanigans (devilish goings on). The first is Nightfall, followed by Midnight, and the third, Nightmare, has just recently been released.

Maria Schneider's Under Witch Moon Shadow Series might be interesting. Adriel isn't officially a detective, but she ends up involved in a number of murders, and the books have a definite whodunnit feel to them.

She might also like Diana Rowland's Mark of the Demon. I haven't personally read that one, but Diana's books have been selling quite well, she's contracted for several more with her publisher, and she has a number of raving fans.

Hard Spell by Justin Gustainis-

Stan Markowski is a Detective Sergeant on the Scranton PD's Supernatural Crimes Investigation Unit.

Like the rest of America, Scranton's got an uneasy 'live and let unlive' relationship with the supernatural. But when a vamp puts the bite on an unwilling victim, or some witch casts the wrong kind of spell, that's when they call Markowski. He carries a badge. Also, a crucifix, some wooden stakes, a big vial of holy water, and a 9mm Beretta loaded with silver bullets.

Pretty Little Dead Things by Gary McMahon-

THOMAS USHER HAS A MOST TERRIBLE TALENT.

Following a car crash in which his wife and daughter are killed, he can see the recently departed, and it's not usually a pretty sight. When he is called to investigate the violent death of the daughter of a prominent local gangster, Usher's world is torn apart once more. For the barriers between this world and the next are not as immutable as once he believed.

Mashing together the grittiest British police procedural with dark supernatural terror, author Gary McMahon creates a refreshingly new take on horror fiction.

Angel of Death by J.Robert King-

A serial killer stalks Chicago.
A gorgeous cop is on his trail.
And someone else is watching, someone who will decide who lives... and who dies.

The Angel of Death in Chicago oversees all people in the city, making sure their deaths fit their lives. But when a gruesome serial killer strikes, the Angel must make a startling choice. He falls in love with the cop on the killer's trail, and has to choose between divinity and humanity. But to do that he must face the biggest terror of all - who he really is.

Kay Hooper writes about paranormal FBI agents lead by Agent Noah Bishop. They are done in sets of three with the same agents popping up in each series: Stealing Shadows, Evil, Fear, and Blood Trilogy.

I last week took out an ePub library book by Victoria Laurie, I read a 1/3 of it, and downloaded 14 samples of her books to Wendies Kindle,

From what I've read so far - She'll read all her books ... I might too !

If your wife wants to try one with a literal ghostly detective, Lee Killough's Killer Karma is about a cop who has to solve his own murder. It was offered free some time ago by the author/publisher who might repeat it at some point. And you can always check to see if you might like her writing by downloading her current freebie which has a vampire cop.

Disclaimer: I have not read either, nor any other works from this author. But other MR members have stated that they enjoy her stuff and were happy to see it offered free.

ETA: There's also a freebie short story for the Jack Nightingale series mentioned upthread, available on Amazon UK.

Chaz McKee (aka Katy Munger) has her "Dead Detective" series, starting with Desolate Angel in 2009. I read it and enjoyed it enough to buy the second one, but I'll admit I haven't read the second one yet. I remember the character being a dead, corrupt policeman, who now looks on and realized how he f'd up his life. But it has been awhile, so I might have a detail or two wrong...

Added: Mark Del Franco has a series or two with magical investigators in "today's world" (that happens to recognize that magic exists). I really like the first series, haven't started the second one. Book 1 of the first series was Unshapely Things. Book 1 of the second series was Skin Deep.

Laura Anne Gilman has her "Retrievers" series. It's NOT about detectives, though. The main character is a magical thief, but she hires out to "retrieve" items for hire. The series evolved into a good-vs-evil battle between mages, so I might be mixing things up a bit, but if I remember correctly, she mostly "retrieved" thing that had been stolen from others or were owned by "bad guys". It's published by Luna, which is a Harlequin imprint, but it's not a romance series. However, there is a relationship that develops over the series of the books (and heads into a specific kink that's pretty funny but it's not erotica at all - I don't remember sex scenes, really, although there might have been quick descriptions - as compared to the step-by-step erotic scenes in some romance novels). She also has a "spin off" series about one of the main character's neighbors. Again, I have the second series, but haven't read it yet. First book in series 1 was Staying Dead. First book in series 2 (and I think it probably shouldn't be started until after reading series 1) was Hard Magic. The second series sounds more investigative, rather than about a thief-with-a-heart-of-gold.

She might like the Kindle Daily Deal for today:
Quote:
If it's New Orleans and the novel's main characters have been dead for years but are still walking around terrorizing people, it must be an Anne Rice adventure. But it isn't--it's the first in a new series starring a fascinating heroine, Seattle parapsychologist Cree Black, whose own murky past and special gifts make her the perfect choice to investigate a haunted house in the Garden District and the family that's slowly being scared to death.
