Talking Fire vs. Vox

Hi! I am looking to an inexpensive tablet (200 dollars) ho have at least android market. SD card is a plus. I'm now between kindle fire and kobo vow. Could you tell me the pros and cons of each one? It'll be used for more than reading books (games, writing one or to notes, movies, etc.).

Thanks,
DD

With the Fire there's no SD card slot and no access to the Android Market. You'll get the Amazon App store. The Fire is not available outside the United States.

With the Vox there's an SD card slot and no access to the Android Market. You'll get access to GetJar (http://www.getjar.com/) for apps.

didn't amazon said you could sideload android apps? And how about software? In your opinion, which one is better? And kindle fire will work ok if outside us (not talking about shipping)

thanks for all your replies,
DD

Amazon said that kindle fire could side load android apps. Is that true or not?

And on http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/19/k...ch-display-gi/ we can read (bold made by me):
Quote:
Canadian retailer Future Shop gave us an accidental sneak peek at the tablet last month, but now Kobo is making Vox official, complete with a 7-inch 1024 x 600 resolution AFFS+ display with multi-touch, a 7-hour battery and 8 gigs of internal memory with support for up to 32GB of SD storage. The $200 tablet is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and is powered by an 800 MHz processor and 512MB of RAM. There's also a built-in speaker and 3.5mm headphone jack, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and a variety of pre-loaded apps (naturally you'll have access to Android Market as well). Vox is listed as in-stock on Kobo's online store, though you'll have to wait until October 28th for yours to ship. It'll also be available at Best Buy and Fry's Electronics stores in the U.S., and Best Buy, Future Shop and Indigo in Canada. Jump past the break for the PR from Kobo.
I'd appreciate any advice on which one is better and why. What i think is that this is something like SD card (kobo vox) vs. hardware (kindle fire). What do you think?

And how about Nook color 2? Any change it'll be out until xmas?

Thanks,

DD

The Fire can download apps from Amazon's Appstore, not Google's Android Market.

I have no idea where the author of that piece got his info, but Kobo hasn't confirmed getting apps from Google. In fact, a screen shot of the Vox shows GetJar as the appstore.

If that's correct, then that's a mistake from Kobo I am afraid, single core tablets are yesteryear news. The BOM difference does not justify going with a single core nowadays.

It's correct. The Vox is essentially a Nook Color clone; only more open.

Yeah thats a big no no ... Only budget tablet manufacturers use less than a 1ghz Cpu now days .. and the only single core cpu that seems to still hold its own with the dual core cpu's is the 1.5ghz snapdragon cpu wich HTC's flyer uses but thats because its 50% faster than most of the dual core cpu's.

To be honest Kobo is selling a tablet thats half the speed with half the storage and half the onboard ram , without the cameras, without the gps, without the built in microphones, without the blutooth without the without the access to the google apps, and without acess to the android market.

The HTC flyer for $69-99 more depending on where your buying it you get access to everything AND have a machine thats twice as good at every single thing the kobo vox does. IMHO its a nobrainer... wait a few more months and either buy the HTC flyer or save longer and get one of the newer better tablets. oh and there is a tablet optimized android 3.2 honneycomb update to the htc flyer thats in beta as i type (the rom has been leaked if your the adventurous type)

It depends on what you are buying a device for. If it's for watching movies and reading the single core will work. If you want to play the latest video games then it's to slow.

But at $200 what do you expect? If you want the latest processor get a higher end tablet.

You really can't expect these companies to go tow-to-tow with Amazon when Amazon is losing money on each tablet sold (so the BOM says).

And $50 cheaper. With a different screen that is suppose to be better than the IPS screen.

Also the nook Touch and the kindle touch and the kindle keyboard. Guess what they are still selling.

Not so sure about that, my NookColor with CM7 struggles badly on movies from websites, like ctv.ca (flash) - to the point that it's not watchable. Sideloaded movies are OK though.

Currently best buy sell them for $299 but every week individual stores have sale one items in thier weekly ad's .. our Eau claire store had it a month back for $269 and the Lacrosse store (both are the same 50 mile ditance from me) had a Garmin nuvi Gps system $49 of regular price for that week. not to mention every month best buy has midnight only sales (that are most of the time useless but someties can find a gem) also if you give them your email they will email you sale of the days to you. keep a fairly close look at what your local best buy has and you may get lucky. other than that most of the ones ive seen for around $270 are open box deals that you have to lok for ..and like i said the regular everyday price for the htc flyer at best buy is $299 Good luck on your search!

Btw this weeks best buy ads show the Sony xperia play gaming cellphone for $1 to you just have to kinda get lucky that the thing you want is on sale
