There have been lots of reports that Amazon are preparing a tablet, so that aspect of the article isn't really news.

Movies? Problem is, how do you get them to the device? 3G is obviously far too slow, and most people have usage caps on home broadband which make downloading multiple hi-definition movies impractical, let alone the time it takes to do it.

Also how could it have a $79 monthly fee when I can get the same service from Netlifx for $8? I'm thinking not.

The article is wrong. Prime is $79 per year, not per month, and free streaming (no where near the number of titles Netflix has at this point) is one of the features along with 2-Day shipping.

But don't forget the Netflix only operates in the US. Amazon sells world-wide.

And don't forget that Amazon rolled out the Kindle here in the states only at first, then sold it world wide later.

Per the article: "I'll speculate even further: Movie tablet customers could be offered Amazon's existing Prime Instant Video service, which gives users unlimited movie downloads for $79 per month. That's a lot of money, but it pays for itself if you watch more than 20 movies per month.

If these movies are Blu-ray quality, and if Amazon improves its selection of TV shows, forget it -- $79 is a steal."

Aside from him thinking Amazon charges nearly a thousand dollars a year for Prime without pondering how obviously ridiculous that seems, he suggests that $80 per month would somehow be worth it if you watched 20 movies. You can have 3 DVDs out at a time for $19.99 at Netflix, easily enough to watch one per day given their turnaround time. And that's in addition to their streaming content.

"Also, it's likely that Amazon's Kindle-for-movies tablet will have an HDMI port so you can plug it into your big-screen, high-def TV -- and cancel your cable subscription.

Many consumers pay for both cable and Netflix. Amazon could replace both and improve the movie-watching experience."

You can already do this for Netflix with a Roku, laptop, HTPC, Xbox/PS3, or nearly every DVD and Bluray player now. And few people consider streaming movie service adequate to replace cable tv. I do, but I don't care about cable to begin with. That article is just..wow.

Actually, it is currently said that Netflix is going to expand to Europe soon, maybe this year.

The article has been corrected to $79/year.

It all seems to be pure speculation based on rumor.

Ahh, okay. I've never looked into Prime, and my mind kind of blanked at seeing the $79 a month fee being called reasonable.

@ J. Strnad Yes, as with the supposed ePub support, it's all just speculation and rumor. It's interesting to think about, but I've no idea what's true and what's fantasy.

There's also the issue that not all Instant Video offerings are free for Prime Members - less than 5% is available free with Prime.

I currently stream Amazon VOD and Netflix to my Asus TF. The quality leaves a lot to be desired as the app was designed for a smaller screen but I can do it.

With the ISPs imposing data caps, expect streaming video picture quality to be DVD at best. Even when the res is advertised as HD, the bitrate is still low compared to even broadcast, let alone bluray quality.

The same way many of us are doing it right now with HD movies in Google's Android Market. It's not "impractical" at all. Quite the contrary.
