Talking Free (Kobo & others) 7 novels from Dundurn [Canadian LGBT, Police, & Amateur Mystery]

Well, a wonderful Remembrance Day treat for Canadian mystery lovers tonight, free courtesy of Dundurn Press, who are one of our premier independent publishers specializing in Canadiana.

For a limited time, Dundurn are generously offering 6 *7* (added this morning @ iTunes and finally propogated elsewhere; I'd been suspecting it was a glitch) entire 1st-in-series novels from their popular mystery writers, featuring a variety of subgenres including detective/police procedurals, scientific & wilderness-living amateur sleuths, LGBT PI, etc., several of which are from award-nominated series, mostly but not all set in Canada.

All of the titles are available at Kobo in multiple regions (Canada, US, and UK I was able to check, may possibly be spread out worldwide).

(ETA 2: Now all available @ iTunes in Canada, possibly elsewhere, as well, and at least three Amazon countries, and partially free at B&N and Google Play.)

These are sporadically being matched over at Google, iTunes (apparently they've yanked most of the titles, which the last time it happened turned out to be the prelude to offering Dundurn writer Gwen Molnar's 1st-in-series novel as a week-long iTunes featured Free eBook of the Week, so maybe this will show up as a special promo feature in the iTunes store later, which Dundurn has kind of done before), and also Amazon (stingily not free for Canadians at all, as they continue to skip us in the multi-store multi-region promos for whatever reason ).

(ETA: looks like Amazon is finally dropping these to free for Canadians and possibly also in the UK. Still no sign of them freebie-ing other official publisher promos which are already free in the other stores. And B&N is also getting some of these in both their applicable regions, it looks like.)

Unfortunately, there's no indication exactly where these are intended for (besides Kobo) or how long this deal will last (Dundurn's newsletter signup having been defunct for some time now and neither their Facebook nor Twitter nor newspage offering any clues when I checked them earlier this afternoon), but hopefully it stays for a bit and propagates through to a few more stores.

I will remind you that Dundurn Press books are couponable @ Kobo and they often offer money-saving omnibuses as well, and at the moment have a small variety of books in a wide variety of subjects temporarily further discounted with their red "Special Offer" banner, which you may perhaps be interested in: linkage for the lot of their couponable stuff @ Kobo

And this has been the selected 3rd (non-repeat, mostly) free ebook thread of the day.

Because Canadiana. And really nice Canadiana, at that.

Enjoy!
  1. Daggers and Men's Smiles by Jill Downie (SYKM), 1st in her Moretti & Falla series of contemporary police procedurals set on the Island of Guernsey in the English Channel @ Kobo & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (also UK)

On the English Channel Island of Guernsey, Detective Inspector Ed Moretti and his new partner, Liz Falla, investigate vicious attacks on Epicure Films. The international production company is shooting a movie based on British bad-boy author Gilbert Ensor's bestselling novel about an Italian aristocratic family at the end of the Second World War, using fortifications from the German occupation of Guernsey as locations, and the manor house belonging to the expatriate Vannonis.

When vandalism escalates into murder, Moretti must resist the attractions of Ensor's glamorous American wife, Sydney, consolidate his working relationship with Falla, and establish whether the murders on Guernsey go beyond the island.

Why is the Marchesa Vannoni in Guernsey? What is the significance of the design that appears on the daggers used as murder weapons, as well as on the Vannoni family crest? And what role does the marchesas statuesque niece, Giulia, who runs the family business and is probably bisexual, really play?

  2. Do or Die by Arthur Ellis Award-winner Barbara Fradkin (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in her Inspector Michael Green series of contemporary police procedurals set in Ottawa @ Kobo & Google Play & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (not yet UK, linkage added for your price-drop check convenience)

This has been previously offered free on iTunes before.

Ottawa Homicide Inspector Michael Green is absolutely obsessed with his job, a condition which has almost ruined his marriage several times. When the biggest case of his career comes up, his position, his relationships and several lives are put into grave danger. A young graduate student and scion of a rich family is found expertly stabbed in the stacks of a university library, but no one seems to have the slightest idea why. But as Green probes into the circumstances of the young man's life, a tangled web of jealousy and intrigue is revealed. Green finds himself in the middle of a rivalry in the delicate arena of university politics, where gigantic egos regularly collide. Was it the diligent but socially inept researcher, or the macho ladies-man golden boy of the laboratory? Or was it a crime of passion involving the over-protective family of his beautiful new girlfriend? When the murderer strikes again, Green realizes that he must waste no time in solving the case, no matter what the consequences may be.
  3. Death's Golden Whisper by Arthur Ellis Award-nominated R. J. Harlick (SYKM), 1st in their Meg Harris series of contemporary amateur sleuth mysteries set in the wilds of West Quebec @ Kobo & Google Play & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (also UK)

In the remote wilderness of West Quebec, where trees outnumber people a million to one and lakes a thousand to one, Death's Golden Whisper opens with the sudden arrival of float planes bringing what Meg Harris believes are fishermen to the isolated northern lake she lives on. Within hours, she discovers that these men have come to develop a gold mine. She combines forces with Eric Odjik, chief of the neighbouring Migiskan reserve, to fight the mining company. The mine splits the Migiskan band into two opposing forces and ignites events that threaten Meg and lead to the mysterious disappearance of her friend Marie. As the search for Marie becomes more frustrating, another story unfolds and Meg discovers the mystery behind the intense feelings that bound her great-aunt to this lonely land until the day she died.
  4. Forever Dead by Suzanne F. Kingsmill, 1st in her Cordi O'Callaghan series of contemporary amateur sleuth mysteries starring a Canadian zoology professor @ Kobo & Google Play & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (also UK)

The discovery of a bear-ravaged body abandoned in the wilderness, some killer rapids, a fumigated lab, stolen research disks, and a stalled career all coalesce into the ripening madness that hauls zoology professor Cordi O'Callaghan into some very wild, very dangerous places.

While the police label the wilderness mauling an accidental death, Cordi realizes that the theft of her disks is somehow related to the body she found in the woods. She must unsnarl the mess if she is to salvage her academic career. Cordi's athletically ingenious and hair-raising solutions to deadly encounters keep her one stumble ahead of a murderer as she follows a path littered with motives. But nothing can prepare her for the final shocking twist that leaves her with a wrenching dilemma – one that no one with a conscience should have to face.

  5. Still Waters by John Moss (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his Quin & Morgan series of contemporary mysteries starring a "virtual couple" of Toronto homicide detectives who can't live together, but also won't stay apart @ Kobo & Google Play & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (also UK)

This psychological mystery introduces David Morgan and Miranda Quin, two maverick and culturally sophisticated Toronto police detectives. When a man is found dead in a garden pond in the wealthy heart of Toronto's Rosedale neighbourhood Morgan is lead into speculations about Japanese ornamental koi fish, and Quin into a chilling sequence of revelations that could destroy her. But the real mystery begins not with the deceased but with a woman who walks onto the crime scene and without emotion declares herself to be the victim's mistress. From that point on everything changes, even the past.
  6. Lake on the Mountain by Lambda Award-winner Jeffrey Round (SYKM, Wikipedia), 1st in his Dan Sharp series of contemporary Ontario mysteries starring a Toronto-based gay single father who works as a missing persons PI @ Kobo & iTunes (available to Canadians) & Amazon (now available to Canadians & in the UK) & B&N (also UK)

The 2nd in series, Pumpkin Eater, is temporary discounted to $3.99 (couponable @ Kobo) in anticipation of the eventual upcoming 3rd.

Dan Sharp, a gay father and missing persons investigator, accepts an invitation to a wedding on a yacht in Ontario's Prince Edward County. It seems just the thing to bring Dan closer to his noncommittal partner, Bill, a respected medical professional with a penchant for sleazy after-hours clubs, cheap drugs, and rough sex. But the event doesn't go exactly as planned.
When a member of the wedding party is swept overboard, a case of mistaken identity leads to confusion as the wrong person is reported missing. The hunt for a possible killer leads Dan deeper into the troubled waters and private lives of a family of rich WASPs and their secret world of privilege.

No sooner is that case resolved when a second one ends up on Dan's desk. Dan is hired by an anonymous source to investigate the disappearance 20 years earlier of the grooms father. The only clues are a missing bicycle and six horses mysteriously poisoned.

  7. ETA: now a seventh! --> Loose Ends by Don Easton (SYKM), himself a former undercover Mountie, 1st in his Jack Taggart series starring an undercover Mountie in Vancouver @ Kobo (not yet UK, perhaps check back later), iTunes (may be in some state of weird flux; it was free when I got it earlier this morning, but looks like it's bounced back up now? leaving the link in case it goes back down again), & Amazon (available to Canadians & also in the UK) & not yet @ B&N (or UK), but some linkage provided for your price-drop check convenience

Jack Taggart, an undercover Mountie, lives in a world where the good guys and the bad guys change places in a heartbeat. Taggart is very good at what he does. Too good to be playing by the rules, so the brass assign a new partner to spy on him.

Taggart's new partner discovers a society dependent upon unwritten rules. To break these rules is to lose respect, and to lose respect is to lose one's life. Loose Ends is is a tale of violence, corruption, and retribution, but it is also a story of honour and respect.

Well, one more has been added today:

Loose Ends by Don Easton (SYKM), himself a former undercover Mountie, 1st in his Jack Taggart series starring an undercover Mountie in Vancouver @ Kobo, iTunes, & Amazon (available to Canadians & also in the UK).

And it looks like Amazon has finally dropped at least some of these to free for Canadians & in the UK, so I'll be checking and editing the links in the OP.

(ETA: now also mostly made it to B&N US & UK.)

If a mod happens to see this, could they please change the thread title to reflect the fact that there are now 7 books free? (and maybe fix the typo in the LGBT acronym while they're at it, if it's not too much to ask). Thanks in advance.

Thanks!

It is free at Kobo US. I wonder why the difference between two places exists when they are owned by the same company. I mean is it all just down to geography?

I wish I knew the reason.

I mean, if it's available at Amazon UK, one would think it would also be available at Kobo UK.

Now all free @ iTunes in Canada (and seem to be free in random countries like Denmark which I spot-checked). And #7, Loose Ends, has now dropped to free in the Kobo UK store as well (and likely anywhere else the other books are available) for those of you who want the entire set in one store.

Updated links in the OP.
