I don't know if this will help, but I format my own ebooks as PDFs and the only time I've noticed sluggishness on my reader is when the total page count exceeds 500 pages. One other thing I've noticed is that with PDFs my reader doesn't reformat the ebooks as long as I leave it at the default (small) size.

If you crash at the same point each time then there is probably something in the html code that is conflicting with the ADE epub renderer in the 300. I've run into this on the 505 and some folks here have shown code examples that we're repeatable.

Call Sony again and explain it crashes at the exact same point over and over again.

After a few complaints filed with Sony, they ended up refunding my money in the form of a credit to their reader store. Thanks to everyone for the tips and advice.
I think I'm going to stay away from downloading collections for a while.
