Question for Sigil users

I'm pearblossom from Holland.

This week I tried out Sigil. I'm very happy with it and I've created my first epub book with it.

One thing I don't seem manage though.......

In some epub-books I've seen that the cover image (or any other image) is being automatically scaled down or up, varying to the zoom size of the reader (for example in Adobe Digital Editions).

Does anyone know what and where to change that in the automatically generated code?

Hi,

I'm really scratching the surface of Epub format, but I was reading the Adobe Best Practices document and the have a specific section about the cover page image. The EPUB document can be found here.

Check the Cover Page and Illustrations section. Maybe you'll find your answer there.

Regards

There are several ways to do this. The IMO best and easiest way would be through CSS, but then you can only scale the image down. With SVG, you can scale it both ways.

This book uses the first approach, and this one uses the second approach. Take a look at the code they use.

Just to make this clear..

SVG support means only that it can read ePubs with SVG elements, right? I tried with one ePub file which contains SVG element and it works fine but I want to create SVG element without copy-pasteing it from some other ebook. Afaik, this is impossible in Sigil atm, am I correct? Is it going to be supported in later Sigil versions that user can create SVG elements with the editor?

This will never be possible with Sigil. SVG is a huge format (much bigger than epub), and to create SVG images you need a full-blown vector image editor, something like Inkscape (OSS and free) or Adobe Illustrator.

Sigil also support PNG, JPG and TIFF images, but that doesn't mean it will ever be Photoshop. An ebook editor needs support for displaying image formats, but not editing them. You use something else for that (like PS for bitmap files and Inkscape for vector art).

Thank you for the answer, Valloric!
This is just an example but I was more thinking about if there would be a button to create simple SVG element e.g.

Code:
<svg version="1.1" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"
           width="100%" height="100%" viewBox="0 0 685 1000" preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid meet">
          <image width="685" height="1000" xlink:href="images/image.jpg" />
        </svg>
So the user could easily add a scaling cover for the ebook. But yes, SVG is a huge format. Anyway, keep up the good work!

That's different. Wrapping an image in SVG so that it automatically scales is a common use case in epub editing and is planned for inclusion into Sigil. Something like a right-click menu option on an image in the Book View, "Wrap in SVG".

Hey! Are you still working on this feature or have you decided not to do it?

I have some template xhtml files on my disk which I can add to an epub in Sigil. So, if I want a cover, I create a cover.xhtml in Sigil, add the cover jpg and paste the source code from my template file into the cover.xhtml. Presto, a working scalable cover with SVG.
It saves me a lot of hassle.

This code does NOT work for resizing jpeg files:
<p><img alt="Cover_Name" src="../Images/Cover_Name.jpg" width="100%" height="100%" /></p>
The resizing taking place looks terrible.

This line works, but does not resize image:
<p><img alt="Cover_Name" src="../Images/Cover_Name.jpg" /></p>

That forces the height and with to be 100%, at the cost of changing the proportions. Also, 100% height can be actually interpreted as 100% width (i.e., a square image), depending on the context.

A bit safer would be "max-width=100%", which keep the images proportion.

The actual quality of the resizing is device dependent.
