(PW) USBNetwork slows down active content ??
Weirdest thing I found so far on my 5.3.1 PW: When usbnetwork is on (had it set to auto, and on all the time over usb) active content gets really slow and unresponsive. The longer I use it the slower it gets. Particularly this one active content does that: Solitaire Collection (Kindle Edition). First thought, meh, badly programmed. But then I checked it out on my KT with 5.3.2 (non jailbroke still) and it was fine. Back to PW and disabled usbnetwork - now it doesn't have any more speed problems. So I deactivated the auto-switch, so that USBNetwork is off until I use it. Will check if it gets better with 5.3.3 and usbsetwork on.
Any explanation what would cause that? |

The serial port connections for the Kpw are posted (and in the index pages). The thread I started also has a link to the Kpw teardown process. It takes a very steady hand to solder to the contact pads and a 1.8 volt, low voltage serial to USB adapter. That gives you access to the operator's console of the OS. From which you can run applications (such as ps and top) that will tell you what is eating up the CPU resources in both cases. |

Ahh, thank you. Makes sense that it is hard to check while it is off USBNetworking. Since the slowdown is only noticeable when it is turned on (even not in use) I will see what I can find. Thought maybe it is a known problem with USBNetwork - can't really think of any reason why that would be.

^ what knc1 said. It does seem very weird indeed. An alternative, which doesn't need serial access, could be to write a startup script (or cronjob) which periodically runs something like "free", "ps" etc., and logs them to a file.
Plus, of course, you could check the logfiles for oddities (possibly with ;debugOn, too). |

Yes - it does sound strange. It must be interacting with something else.
ixtab's scripting suggestion might be able to catch what is happening. |

Small update: Even without usb network on, it managed to crash really good. It said - an error occured in your application, kindle will restart in 5 sec. I made a screenshot of that, and it flashed, so hopefully that evidence is there later. Funny enough after the restart it appears to work now. Now testing what I need to do to make it crash again.
Might be completely unrelated to USB Network. Already tried other active content, used CM, JBPatch, opened and read some in a book. Enabled USB Network again. Nada, that game still plays fine. Yeah, I want it to work, but I would like to know what it, the Kindle or me is doing wrong. |

read your crash log.
/mnt/us/developer/<thing>/work/crash.log will tell you why. |

Generally, looking at the showlog output is more promising, but of course, it's worth taking a look at the dev crash logs too. |

It only says memory in critical state and heap memory low. And once a User interface call took longer than 5000ms.

Not really helpful, but maybe some java expert can see something. Is there any classes that JBPatch might have done something to? |

Your Kindle is simply out of memory.
PS: And no, JBPatch doesn't just randomly break things. |

Yep, USBNetwork only starts a telnetd/sshd than sits there doing nothing if no-one is connecting/ed, so, except eating 2 to 4MB of RAM, it shouldn't cause any issue... .

Thank you for the help. Maybe the Kindle simply runs out of memory (doh ). Could swap help? Almost tempted to try out with a loopback image in /mnt/us and see if /bin/swapon and /bin/swapoff might be a good idea to call on demand - e.g. start it, run the app that is crashing all the time, afterwards turn back off.
Unless there really is a memory leak, and no amount of virtual ram will help. |
