The Seeds of Power by Christopher Nicole

1854, England.

Out on a hunting trip, Colin MacLain and a scullery maid, Jennie Cromb, save Count Bolugayevski from a bog. He's quite taken with Jennie and when he leaves, takes her with him, much to Colin's disappointment.

At the Battle of Balaclava, after has been declared against Russia, Lieutenant Colin MacLain of the 11th Hussars finds himself wounded and taken captive by his old enemy Bolugayevski.

His entanglement with the three beautiful Bolugayevska sisters, the arrogantly sensual Dagmar, the mysterious Anna, and the frivolous Alexandra, leads him to both triumph and tragedy.

Christopher Nicole (born 1930) was brought up in British Guyana and the West Indies. He was a prolific historical writer, both under his own name and pennames. His books include 'The Command', 'The Regiment' and 'Sword of Fortune'.

Lady in Waiting by Rosemary Sutcliff

Handsome and gifted, Walter Raleigh was a star even in a court of brilliant men ruled by one of the greatest monarchs of all time, Elizabeth I.

Raleigh held position and power, and was loved by the Queen, but his dream was to conquer new lands for Elizabeth, to find El Dorado.

Bess Throckmorton was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour.

Shy and retiring, her dream was to capture the heart of the proud and restless Raleigh, in whose life it seemed she would always come second.

But when Elizabeth dies and James I comes to power, Raleigh's fortunes take a dramatic turn...

Once a beloved courtier, he becomes a disgraced prisoner.

Rosemary Sutcliff CBE (14 December 1920 - 23 July 1992) was a British novelist best known for children's books, especially historical fiction and retellings of myths and legends. For her contribution as a children's writer Sutcliff was a runner-up for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1974. Although she was primarily a children's author, some of her novels were specifically written for adults. Her other adult works include `The Rider of the White Horse'

Yesterday's Child by Ruth Benjamin, a Jewish-themed literary religious heritage exploration self-discovery with dark secrets thriller, originally out from CIS in 1992.

Yesterday's Child" is the gripping and unusual tale of a courageous young man who, as a young boy, suffers the tragic loss of his mother, with whom he had lived with since her divorce from his father. After his mother's death he begins life anew in the picturesque South African city of Cape Town with his father, stepmother, and new siblings.

What starts out as simple bar-mitzvah lessons blossoms into an abiding friendship with a local rabbi and his family. Despite his parents objections, he is drawn to the Torah and to his newfound friends as a thirsty traveler is drawn to an oasis in the desert. When he reaches adulthood, however, his seemingly brilliant and joyful future is suddenly shattered by startling revelations about his past.

On the threshold of life's most critical decisions, he is thrust into the agony of dealing with dark secrets he cannot divulge to anyone besides his very closest friend. The reader watches with bated breath as the troubled young man embarks upon a voyage into his past, a voyage whose outcome will determine the very essence of his present and future.

Benjamin's other mostly-Jewish-themed (the author is Orthodox, according to her bio-blurb, and incorporates faith elements into many of her works) backlist and self-published novels from previous days are also still free.

Venus in Furs by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch

This classic 19th century novel was the first uncompromising exploration of the dominant/submissive relationship in literature. The alliance of Severin and Wanda epitomises the author''s obsession with a cruel, controlling goddess '

At the time this tale of the man and his quest for physical abuse by fair ones was written, it was considered literary, not perverted or pornographic.

The Wild Garden by Harriet Smart, a contemporary literary/women's fiction novel with romantic elements, apparently involving two women who unwittingly get involved with a man whom they discover is a lying liar who lies, originally out from Hodder's Headline imprint in 1996.

Kate Mackenzie is on the brink of success as an artist when she meets Gabriel Erskine, twenty-two years her senior. She is captivated by his understanding of her paintings and his outlook, so different from that of her friends, and six months later Kate moves into Gabriel's beautiful house in Fife, set in rambling gardens. She doesn't know him well, but what better way to change that than by living with him?

Henrietta Winthrop has no idea, when she arrives in St Andrews, that Gabriel Erskine lives nearby. Almost thirty years earlier, she made a decision that affected both their lives, a decision she has often questioned since. When she discovers that the young woman she has befriended in the grounds of the ruined cathedral lives with Gabriel, Henrietta is stunned, yet can't resist an invitation to Allansfield. But how will she feel when she sees Gabriel and Kate together in the home that once could have been hers?

At Allansfield, the arrival of Gabriel's son Hugh, with his young child, has brought the age difference with her lover sharply into focus for Kate, while her creativity is stifled by the luxury around her. When she realises that Gabriel has lied to her about the past, Kate begins to wonder if she can ever be fully part of his life - and if this is what she wants anyway...

Ghost on the Steppe by Cecelia Holland

Djela's grandfather, Psin Khan, has returned as head of the Merkit tribe from fighting the enemies of the Mongols.

A trusted member of the Kha Khan's court, Psin is always ready and willing to entertain Djela with stories of bravery and sacrifice.
Djela wants to prove that he too can live up to his family name.
And when his father praises him during archery practise he is sure he is about to receive his first adult bow.
But then everything goes wrong.
To protect his friend Djela lies to his father.
And no Mongol could tolerate a deliberate untruth...
Djela is sent off to the far north station as punishment, herding the family flocks of cattle and horses for a month.
There was nothing Djela hated more.
But there was excitement at the North Camp he had not anticipated.
Some of the men insisted that a ghost tiger was killing their calves.
Whatever it was, it eventually became Djela's job to track it down.
And it was in his relentless pursuit of the mysterious beast that he became a true heir to his grandfather...

Cecelia Holland is widely acknowledged as one of the finest historical novelists of our time. She is the author of more than thirty novels, including `Hammer For Princes' and `The King's Road'.

My Heavenly Father by Dana Crum, his literary fiction short which was originally published in Gumbo: An Anthology of African American Writing and had a dramatic reading on National Public Radio affiliate WBEZ in Chicago.

Set in Birmingham, Alabama, written in Southern vernacular, the story is told by Andre, an eight-year-old boy who misses his absent father while in church one Sunday. Though precocious, Andre is not old enough to fully understand the world around him and the circumstances that affect his life. What he understands—and what he doesn’t—drives the story’s humor and sadness. Dana Crum can spin a tale as well as anyone, and he makes words sing and dance. Nowhere is that more apparent than in this story.

Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:

The Curiosity Cabinet by BBC Radio playwright Catherine Czerkawska, her contemporary literary fiction novel originally out from Polygon's Birlinn imprint in 2005 and shortlisted for that year's Dundee Book Prize, according to the blurb.

When Alys revisits the beautiful Hebridean island of Garve after an absence of twenty five years, she is captivated by the embroidered casket on display in her hotel. She discovers that it belongs to Donal, her childhood playmate, and soon they resume their old friendship. Interwoven with the story of their growing love, is the darker tale of Henrietta Dalrymple, kidnapped by the formidable Manus McNeill and held on Garve against her will. With three hundred years separating them, the women are linked by the cabinet and its contents, by the tug of motherhood and by the magic of the island itself. But Garve has its secrets, past and present. Donal must learn to trust Alys enough to confide in her and, like Henrietta before her, Alys must earn the right to belong.

The Sorrows of Young Werthe by Goethe

Free Kindle edition in US Amazon. This is the Open Road Media version.

http://www.amazon.com/Sorrows-Werthe...dp/B00RWJPRM8/

Probably Goethe's best known work after Faust.

The description from Amazon:

Goethe’s classic story of tormented love and destruction

Told through lyrical and impassioned letters to his friend Wilhelm, this novel follows the ardent young Werther to the German countryside, where he delves into artistic pursuits and basks in the simplicity of village life. But Werther’s tranquility is shattered when he meets the captivating Charlotte at a ball in a nearby town. Every bit his equal in temperament and intellectual interests, Charlotte quickly becomes Werther’s singular obsession. He falls inextricably in love despite her engagement to another man. Overtaken by his affection for Charlotte and unable to extricate himself from the unrequited love, Werther must make peace between his artistic temperament and the harsh realities of the world.

Among the first—and most notable—examples of Germany’s Sturm und Drang movement, The Sorrows of Young Werther was enormously influential upon its publication in 1774, creating a cult of personality around the tragic figure of Werther and causing a sensation in Europe’s literary community.

The Bank Robber by Robert Broomall, a Texas-set western historical adventure originally out from Fawcett Gold in 1985.

The story of an outlaw on the run, the girl he meets in the desert, and the posse that's chasing him -- led by his best friend.

Swede Burdette is a legend in Texas -- as a Texas Ranger, soldier, Indian fighter. Things went bad while he was away at the war, though, and when he came back, he turned outlaw. John Kirby is a Texas Ranger who always brings in his man, usually dead. When Swede robs the bank in Temperance, Kirby leads the posse that goes after him. Kirby was Swede's boyhood friend, but now he's vowed to put an end to Swede's depredations. He also married the woman Swede loved. Swede is on the run to Mexico when he encounters a girl named Rosie, a prostitute, the only survivor of an Indian raid. If Swede leaves Rosie in the desert, she'll die, so he takes her with him, even though she'll slow him down enough that the posse is bound to catch him . . .
