Just tried it. Still get just the iPhone app, and 2x makes it look all pixellated, even with "small" type selected. I did want to get it (after all, I already have Kobo, iBooks, and Kindle for iPad installed, why not B&N too?) but I'll wait for a dedicated iPad version too.

It is version 1.1.5
The fonts look fine to me, but remember, I can't see. Is this the same version you guys got? |

Actually Ariel at 2x looks pretty decent to me - you can really tweak the appearance - line spacing, etc. to reduce/de-emphasize some of the fuzziness from the clunky magnification.

Ditto here. It needs an iPad app not a 2x implementation.

B&N app on iPod Touch
It seems that the B&N app has to frequently re-download the book I'm reading. Any one else seeing this?

My biggest criteria for an ereader app would be its ability to read files downloaded from someplace other than the original store (in this case B&N). I have thousands of epubs and I don't want a different reader for each book.

If you can strip the DRM, you can use iBooks for now.

That's just what I am planning to do. Most of the books that I have do not have DRM anyway (as I only buy DRMed books if I have to). Besides, I think iBooks looks really good. To be fair, I've only played with it in the store. (Counting down: 15 days till iPad delivery)

re-download
Yes. And it requires my credit card number every time. Since I don't have it memorized it's a nuisance. Also, I am new to eBook and have gone this route because I am looking at a long hospitalization. This is not a process that is feasible in that situation. I have downloaded on the iPod and iPad Kindle, eReader, B&N eReader, iBooks and thus far have only purchased a few titles in each App. I do not see this issue with the other Apps and since I prefer the pricing of Amazon eBooks that's the App I have defaulted to using.

Of the primary iPad ebook readers; iBooks, Kindle, Kobo, Goodreader and B&N, the latter is the worse. The first 4 are pretty good.
Don't get mad - just one opinion. I'm looking forward to what Borders will be offering when their Kobo device is released in June and what their ebook store will offer and at what prices. |

Just tried the B&N app. It stinks. No page turn animation, primary interface is lacking. No sideloading. iBooks is still the best app. If I can load my B&N books to iBooks I will fully hand my Nook to the wife.

I tried the iPad version last night. It has some nice features, but I would prefer an easier way to set brightness, without creating "recipes." I find that a pain.
So far, I like the Kindle app best, because of its features, as well as book prices and selection. I'm not buying iBooks, because they're tethered to Apple devices. I also don't care about page animation or double-page reading. Last edited by Maggie Leung; 05-27-2010 at 11:33 AM. |

The new B&N eReader for the iPad does have some interesting features but lacks others. I liked the ability to set different "themes" of font and page colors. And the small selection of fonts is nice as is the large number of font sizes. Still, it's really not up to iBooks, Kindle or ReadMe. I think that this does illustrate a problem with where the ebook marketplace is today thanks to DRM. A bookseller such as B&N who sells DRM'd books must now also be a software developer or at least a software producer. When a new platform such as the iPad comes out there is a real scramble so that people who change platforms can keep access to their books. Should a major bookseller someday NOT support a new and very popular platform I think we would finally see a DRM debate at the grass roots level as thousands lose "their" books. But, for now, we have to watch as companies that are not software companies are forced to release software. It's not always going to be pretty. And it is ALWAYS going to be confusing!
