Cybook not found in linux, found in win XP

AS the title says, the cybook is recogniced bboting the computer in XP, but it does not show at all in linux (ubuntu 7.10). No disks are found when I connect, as if it does not exist. Any ideas?. It seems well connected to one port of the motherboard in the back.

Check with dmesg if you get the device. If you do not get the device make sure that the correct USB modules are loaded.

I've been using it exclusively with Ubuntu 7.10 without problems (with and without an SD card). Can you give any more information so we can help you troubleshoot?

Maybe the last lines refer to it, because I have no other usb drives connected. I can connect my external usb harddrive or any usb flashdrive (I've tried a few). What modules can I load to try and how?.

Thanks.

There's definitely something being found. Do you have an SD card in the Cybook? I think some people have had problems with that. When I get home tonight I'll plug my cybook in and see what pops up in Dmesg and if it looks weird/different.
Have you tried a different USB port? It looks like you're going through a hub, can you try plugging it into one of the ports that's actually on the computer?
Sorry I can't be more helpful right now. It turns out I pretend to know a lot more about Linux than I really do. :-/

What you should see in the dmesg output is something like:

Code:

So something is wrong. You are probably missing a module or maybe it is that you connect through a hub.

Do lsmod to check which modules you have loaded. I think it depend on the kernel version which ones you need. For older kernels I think scsi_mod is needed but for never kernels you use usb_storage instead.

Definitely, the dmesg changes after plugging the cybook is:

[ 156.414141] usb 7-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 5

I am not using a hub, and the problem persists after using any usb connection in my computer.

Did the Gen3 work after you had tested the flash usb drive since usb_core seemed to be loaded then. What kernel version are you running?

If it hadn't worked in Windows I would have suggested to check the cable and that it was properly connected. Maybe you should test with the Live CD referred to above.

Using 2.6.24-2-generic (but the problem is the same with 2.6.22). I tested it after or with the flash drive with no luck. I tried booting with the ubuntu 7.10 live cd with no luck.

Are there any other usb devices connected to your PC? If you have, you could try the following:

PC:
1. disconnect all usb devices
2. power off PC
3. boot PC

Cybook:
4. remove SD card from Cybook
5. reboot Cybook
6. connect Cybook to PC, without any other usb devices attached

The reason for this approach is, that there are some linux drivers for usb devices which are a bit clumsy (even on my favourite Gentoo system)

We had a similar situation posted here earlier. If I remember correctly, the Cybook *was* connected directly to the PC, but *NOT* to the right USB port. Yes, under WinXP that's not a problem, but under Linux, *some* USB ports are better - more recognizeable - than others. For example, there are two direct-to-the-motherboard ports on my HP Pavilion - on the front of the machine - which can recognize the Cybook, even under Linux. And two of the rear USB ports will, but the other two and the USB port built into the internal 9-card media reader *won't recognize it at all and even WinXP won't recognize the Cybook if I plug the cable into the media card's USB port. So check this out.
