By comparison, the number of iOS devices sold through June according to CNET report is 400M.
We all stand to benefit from this kind of neck-to-neck competition. :-) |

There has been a definite surge this year in Apps for android and it's partly to to do with Google as they handed out 7000 free nexus 7 on it's launch and im seeing new Apps for it all the time.
And plenty of these Apps also work for other android devices so every ones benefiting. I have also compared the Google play store with Itunes store i installed on my PC and in the games section there almost matched one for one. As you will notice the Amazon App store for good games is thread bare to say the least, this also goes for useful Apps too. ......................................google play.........................Itunes..........US amazon App store Sonic the hedgehog ............... 5 versions.......................5 versions.............2 The horn..................................1........... .........................1....................0 grand theft auto 3......................1.......................... ..........1................... 0 nova 3.....................................1........... .........................1...................0 Asphalt 7..................................1.............. ......................1...................0 Babel ring 3D.............................1.................. ..................1...................1 Final Fantasy series of games.........2................................... 3..................0 X-planes - fight simulator..............1.......................... ..........1..................0 Dead trigger................................1.......... ..........................1..................0 Need for speed series....................2....................... .............2..................0 Last edited by darksaber35; 09-13-2012 at 05:47 AM. |

Thats half a billion Android devices that have google market. If you take the ports that companies like Amazon have made or Chinese manufacturers are doing and the non google play supported device I think the number of Android devices might be a few hundred million more than what google is counting. As they only count devices that are use google apps.

Android seems to be selling quite well due to a combination of lower prices and carriers aggressively pushing it over rival models because they resent the control they've ceded to Apple and are able to easily install their bloatware on Android handsets.
Since until very recently 95% of the install base was using a 2-year old version of the OS, we know it's not the killer new features. Since there are no Android-exclusive developers of any importance, the app store is lacking, and Android gets iOS' hand-me-downs a couple years after they've already come out, it can't be the ecosystem. Since mobile traffic from Android devices represents a pittance of the global total relative to their market share, you have to wonder what people use their Android devices for. Are they even using them as smartphones? Hey, it could be the marketing. After all, who doesn't want a phone that Batman had to kidnap from the back of an armoured truck? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yj9yisLa4ao |

Mine is mostly used as an e-reader, camera and video player. So you won't see much web traffic from it.

So are mine. When you have 720p screens and fast CPUs, there's no point viewing the mobile version of a site.

It's interesting to note you can grab very much cheaply today some androids that were top of the line just a few years ago. Never it was so cheap to get yourself a fully accomplished pocket computer.

Here in NZ Android phones are really cheap. For example, the ZTE R22 (4", ICS) is selling at about US$200 contract free. In just a few years, I think you can get a really great phone for under $100 contract free.
