Our dog had to be put down not too long ago.

At the moment the family pets include a happy little bunny and a cute little turtle.

We had an 18 year old Shih Tzu that had to go. She would walk into a corner and bark until we rescued her. We still talk about her a year later.

Here's my cat, Josie. I actually had to leave her with a family member in Washington when I moved to Japan. Last time I was there she remembered me, though.

She's fat, and can't really sit right. Also one toe on her left hind leg is white.

My Multifasciatus neolamprologus (Tanganyikan dwarf cichlids) - male, female and kids. They use the snail shells as cover and "homes".

Isn't cichlids one of the harder fishes to keep alive. My uncle has an extreme interest for aquarium fishes. He used to breed and sell cichlids to the pet-shops. His whole kitchen was full of aquarium tanks.

Fish are generally easy to keep if their conditions match their natural habitat. Some are more "discerning" than others, but the cichlid family is really large and diverse. Some would be difficult and others easy. For the cichlids from the great African lakes of Tanganyika and Malawi, they require hard, mineral rich water - which match water condition in Denmark admirably. So they are easy here. But the South American cichlids thrive better in soft water and are considered more difficult. Usually you can keep them alive - it's getting them to breed that can be hard. But AFAIK you have soft and quite clean water in Norway, so that should fit them. One thing that makes cichlids stand out as aquarium fish is their family life and behaviour. There's lots of life's small dramas - breeding, fighting, nursing the kids, etc. - to observe all the time. Schooling fish is a lot more boring.

Edit: added photos. My cichild aquarium as it looks currently. All the landscaping of the sand was done by the alpha male. I just provided him with the flat canvas of 3-4 cm of sand evenly spread over the bottom

Of course he is. I'm trespassing on his territory and threatening him and his females. It's all in Alpha Males for Beginners.

And that also shows one of the fun things about keeping cichlids - they have an interesting home life that's worth observing. Not very soothing such an aquarium though

Ah that is quite an important quality of aquariums. the soothiness. Once I had one, quite big, actually my first that I built with my hands, and one day it just exploded, at about 4 in the morning. Quite a soothing experience. And I was able to recover my choridoras leopards, from the new couch.

I like Corydoras catfish - with a sand layer in their aquarium, it is so fascinating to watch how they "snuffle" through the sand, sifting it through their gills, searching for edibles.

They did, almost all of them. And they started again moving, often in formation, with heads that resemble helmets of ancient warriors, but very little compared to the one you showed.

Now, seeing your family of Multifasciatus neolamprologus gives me a new stir to approach again the world of aquariums, after,...quite a long time. Thank you.
