How to upgrade firmware when using calibre?

I've been playing around with both the Sony and Calibre software; I'm aware that one should not use both and that one has to remove media.xml files after using calibre. But it seems that calibre does all things better than the Sony software.

Except one thing: firmware upgrades.

So does one have to lose all the metadata (collections, bookmarks, etc.) when I want to upgrade the firmware?

Firmware update doesn't touch user files, it only updates the internal software.

Thanks for the response.

Okay, that's great. Only...doesn't one have to use the Sony desktop software to do the upgrade? If so, using calibre precludes using the Sony software (without doing the delete media.xml thing), no? Or does one use a different program/process to upgrade the firmware?

The firmware updater is a completely stand-alone executable. All the Sony EBL software does is tell you that it's available. You can download it manually from the Sony support site.

Excellent! I'm glad I'm not locked in. Once again, I'm pleased not to have bought a Kindle...
