Think I'll make some popcorn and watch Hombre again tonight.

I started The Cowboy and The Cossack last night and like it a lot. I especially appreciate Nancy Pearl's introduction. Thanks for the tip on that one. It's my second fictional trip to Vladivostok this month and it's nice to return with some cowboys.

Hombre, published in 1961, and Valdez is Coming, published in 1970, were both adapted to film. Although Valdez is Coming received mostly mediocre movie reviews, Hombre with Paul Newman was a hit. Both are excellent novels.

Several other Elmore Leonard westerns are also offered for $3.79. I haven’t yet read them, at least that I can remember, but you can’t really go wrong with a Leonard novel.

These same books are $3.99 at B&N and Kobo. At BoB they are $4.35.
Hombre and Valdez are showing as $2.90 for me at BoB thanks for the rec I'll think I'll give these a go

Yeah, obviously they don't want to spend any time adding up sales here.

With slow price adjustments, Hachette ebooks more expensive than yankee paperbacks from shops here. So they are crazy people. They then lose both ways.

Free today at Amazon: The Benicia Belle by L.J. Martin. Originally published in print by Thorndike Press, 1992.

US
UK
DE

Quote:
Statehood has come to California, a rich young land of golden opportunity. Speculators, fortune hunters, roughnecks, and con men have come from every corner of the earth to stake a claim. And nowhere is the competition more cutthroat than on the riverboats plying the waters from San Francisco into the wide-open interior. Money flows in the direction of progress, and where there is money, there is sure to be greed, violence, and deceit.

When former seaman John Clinton Ryan signs on as master-at-arms on the Benicia Belle, he finds he may have set his hand to his own death warrant. Blackmailed by the Belle's owner, and drawn to a woman as beautiful - and as dangerous - as the sea he left behind, Ryan sets off on a murderous new course. Framed for a crime he didn't commit, he has one last chance to exact a measure of justice and revenge...before his debt to the hangman comes due.

L. J. Martin's passion for Old California spills over into every word he writes. From the diversity of the land and the glorious history of its earliest inhabitants to the brave and enterprising men and women who rushed to claim it, this talented novelist boldly mines America's last great frontier for stories that are truly unforgettable.

They Rode Good Horses [Kindle Edition] D. B. Jackson (Author)

http://www.amazon.com/They-Rode-Good...154606011_f_80

Quote:
THEY RODE GOOD HORSES is the 2012 winner of the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Western fiction.

It's the epic story of Brady McCall and Franklin T. Stilwell, aged 10 and 15, who witness their families die in a brutal attack. Orphaned and alone halfway across the American frontier, they face the harsh reality that their own ordeal has just begun and their very survival is at stake. With no time for mourning, and only their horses to provide them a lifeline, the boys embark upon an adventure that takes them on a journey that spans half a century.

As old men, they reflect back on a friendship forged in blood and tempered in honor, and they plan one more grand crusade before they are willing to go quietly into a life where only memories define who they are.

Free today from Amazon: Maria's Ride by John Horst. UK DE

Quote:
Prequel to The Mule Tamer trilogy, Maria’s Trail chronicles the first adventures of Senora Arvel Walsh. Chica, Artemis, the beautiful devil, she is the great tragic hero of The Mule Tamer saga. Follow this remarkable woman as she journeys through the first adventures of her life, suffering hardship and pain, loss and danger, betrayal and first love. Her exploits are legendary and it soon becomes evident why everyone who comes under her spell can only love her. Maria’s Trail is a long and tumultuous one, essential to make the glorious Maria the remarkable creature that we’ve come to know and love.

Free today at Amazon: The Texicans by Jinx Schwartz, first published in hardcover by Sundowners, 2005.

Quote:
Author Elizabeth Schwartz, a ninth-generation Texan, has delved deep into her ancestral roots to create this moving story of the Frederick Stockman familys' courageous determination to make Texas their home during the turbulent period between 1806 and 1836.

The Texicans was inspired by a Texas history book calling her ancestral clan a "congenial society for evil"--rogues "skilled in many forms of villainy" for their role in the tumultuous years of first Spanish, then Mexican rule.
I was amused by the second paragraph in the above description since it was similar to my own genealogical research when I found a letter from Sam Houston describing my grandfather, several generations removed, as "the worst snake in Texas".

Free today from Amazon: Blind Trail by Mark Bannerman, first published in hardcover by Robert Hale Ltd, 2004. UK DE

Quote:
Whilst on military patrol, Lieutenant Raoul Webster, United States Cavalry, is blinded in a freak accident. Granted furlough by the Army, he subsequently sets out, guided by his young brother, for San Francisco where he intends to consult an eye doctor. But en-route, the stagecoach conveying them is ambushed by ruthless Mexican bandits. Raoul’s brother is cold-bloodedly murdered, as are the driver and male passengers of the coach. Raoul survives, but is left alone in the wilderness, vulnerable to all Fate can throw at him. He is kept alive by one burning ambition: to track down his brother’s killer. Surmounting incredible difficulties, he follows a bullet-strewn trail south of the Mexican border. And there he faces a bloody showdown with those guilty of the ambush and murder.
Mark Bannerman has published over 2 dozen westerns primarily with the British publishers Robert Hale Ltd. (Black Horse Western) and F.A. Thorpe (Linford Western Library).
