Kindle Store or B&N Store

I posted in the Kindle section to see if I am missing out on anything with Kindle 1, but someone suggested the $99 Nook, so now I am wondering, what store is better.

The reason I ask is because I know you can do all these DRM strips and everything else, but I rather just buy from the store and be done with it.

B&N claims to have 2 million books where I think Amazon said 610,000 (unless I read that wrong). Quality is better than Quantity.

I had an EzReader, but now looking at these two.

I can get a Kindle 3 for 110, so the store is the deciding factor.

B&N only has that number of books because they count the 500,000 free, public domain books from google in their catalogue. Many of those PDF's are of low quality (from google books that is) and can be gotten in better quality from other sites like The Gutenberg Project, which can also be downloaded in Kindle format.

Amazon has access to those books also, but they don't count them in their catalogue number. Amazon has the largest in-copyright book catalogue of roughly 700,000 titles, and increasing every day Amazon has had a head start, and there's no reason to think that they won't keep it.

Also, why are you looking at a Kindle 1?

Hope this helped!

I see these sets of numbers all the time, but I think they're pretty meaningless, depending on what each individual is really looking for. For me, there's been exactly one book I want available at Amazon that is not also available at BN.

I'd say look at both bookstores for the books/authors/genres you are most interested in, and see what the selection is, and if Amazon really does have the advantage for your purposes.

Write down the last 10 books your read or a list of 10 books to want to read. Look up each book at Amazon and B&N to compare prices and availability. Also check a site like Inkmesh which lists prices from various ebook retailers. The Nook can read ebooks from retailers other than B&N as they support the epub format.

Also, check your local library to see if they have a selection of ebooks that is acceptable to your reading tastes. The Nook can read library books without having to remove any DRM.

Yeah love Inkmesh, didn't know about the Nook working with other sites.

I live in Philadelphia, so yeah I have a nice library for Ebooks lol.

Kindle 1 just because it was cheap near me, but seeing that the wifi 3g model is only 119 on B&N site has me pratically sold, I just wanted to know I was not being hosed by the store. I hope they sell pre own in the store so I can just get it tonight.

James Rollins in on both sites, for same price so I think I am good there lol. And the Lost Hero soo I maybe going with the nook

The Nook will read ebooks from any site that offers ePub (very similiar to your Astak).

I have a library card for Philadelphia and they have a very good selection that is expanding very fast.

Yes I lost mine, I have to take a walk to the library around the corner and get a new one. I know a lot of people everywhere talk about $15 a year just to access it, when I get it for free. Lucky me.

I can't say one store is better than the other. I use both. I compare prices before buying & have found lately they are usually the same. There have been a few books I could get on Amazon that I couldn't get at B&N. That happens seldom now. Both are good readers. It depends on the which you find the most comfortable & whether you still want library books.

Amazon isnt really guilt free either of "padding" punch in Dracula and see how many titles come up for the same book but yet they count each of the title different.

amazon's huge lead has shrunk considerable in the past year. Amazon still has some more title of the more obscure authors.

But let's be honest there really isn't much separating them anymore. A year ago sure, today NOPE.

Yeah well, went with the Nook. 100 bucks, with a warranty already and in my hands today. Wifi only, but I figured I can buy books using the app on my Phone, go to bagel shop in my building here at work which has wifi, and sync it up if needed to. I doubt, I am magically going to want to buy a book while on the train. Though I can always hack my phone to be a hotspot.

I think you're going to really enjoy the nook, rock. Though I may be getting another e-reader, I have a nook and really enjoy it. Since it sounds like you may live near a B&N and you like to sit at cafes, one of the great things about the nook is bringing it to a store and browsing books on your nook for free, and the nook gives you free in-store deals too, on books and at the cafe. And if you ever have any questions or problems, you can always call them if you want, but you can also go ask a live nook specialist in the store, which I've done before and gotten excellent service.
