Confused About Versions

Hi all. I'm just getting started with eBooks and have just downloaded and started playing with Calibre. It looks great, but I'm confused about versions.

While searching the web, I found a large number of references to Calibre version 0.7.5, which supposedly had improved working with Kobo readers (my eReader). The Calibre site download shows me only V0.7.44. Is this the latest version? If so, what are the references to later versions about? The ones I saw implied 0.7.5 was released, not beta.

The reported ability to delete the free Kobo books with V0.7.5 interested me greatly.

In the Calibre numbering scheme '5' is less than '44' !

Also with Calibre then genuine beta releases are actually very rare. What there is a weekly release cycle that combines increments in functionaliy with fixes produced during the last week for any issues found. This can means that no release gets exhaustive testing - if an issue is identified then a fix can normally be expected within the week.

As a result it is always a good idea to keep the download of the last version that worked OK for you in case the weekly updated causes you a problem and you want to revert. In some ways the RAD (Rapid Application Development) methodolgy used by Calibre is a bit like a perpetual beta. This does mean you can have short term problems identified, but it does mean extremelybrapid improvements in functionality. This approach also lends itself to having a distributed team of developers each working independently on their own areas of interest within Kovid providing overall stewardship.

Calibre version 0.7.5 (think of it as 0.7.05) was released on 25 June, 2010. Calibre version 0.7.44 was released 04 Feb, 2011. This amounts to about one new release every week (usually on Fridays). You can check out what features are new with each version by reading this change log.

Thanks for the replies, guys. OK, 0.7.5 is sort of 0.7.05. Makes sense now.

Just have to learn my way through the app now.

And figure out what to do with those free books. Don't want to trash them all - I'd like to keep copies somewhere - but would like them off the Kobo because they get in the way of the books you are actually reading. Back to research then...
