Epub reader with zoom?

Hi everybody! I'm a student from the Royal Intitute of Tech in Stockholm and I'm doing my thesis on the EPUB-format, focused on mostly images, children's books and comics. Looking for a reader that can zoom in the epub-file... any ideas? I know that there are readers on the iPhone that uses Safari to view the pages. Is there perhaps a reader that uses Safaris zoom functionality?

Love this forum by the way, it's where I get most of my answers.

safari (more specifically webkit) doesn't render .epub documents. the ipad OS does not have native .epub rendering, any .epub documents must be rendered by the application itself.

Thanks for answering. I got the information that an epub reader on the iPhone used safari (webkit) in some way to display the content. Might be mistaken. More importantly, I'm trying to find a reader with zoom, I can build some sweet epub comics on the iPhone, ideas?

ePub is a wrapper around HTML documents, so it may well be that the reader applications use webkit to do the actual rendering.
I think for comics the suggestions would either be to have them in cbz/cbr format and use a specialist comic application such as ComicZeal, or convert to PDF and use something like GoodReader.

Zoom isn't really relevant to ePubs in particular since ePubs don't have a default width and height.

Now for comics, it might make sense to ask which renderers/applications automatically resize images in an ePub that are larger than the viewport. So far, I haven't seen any that don't resize the image to fit the screen.

I use iBooks and readMe.

Zoom would still be nice. I was reading something on the iPad that had a diagram of a family tree in very small "print". Increasing the font size did nothing to help. Zoom would have been helpful, the magnifying glass in iBooks just doesn't cut it.

In case you're interested, I added epub support to my manga/comic processor: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79004 (make sure to grab the latest version, v1.61 or higher)

Without zoom and the virtual iBook taking up a big chunk of the screen, epub manga/comics are not recommended. Pdf and cbz manga/comics work a lot better.

Soo I guess that the answer to my question is that there isn't any epub reader with zoom. A bit of e bummer, would be nice if you're having an epub file with images and are reading on lets say, an iPhone...

well, while epub supports images, it's mostly a a text format, and to zoom text you just increase the font size. i guess none of the epub ereader authors thought to include zooming graphics function because it's probably not a highly requested feature.. documents that are mainly graphics or concerned about precise graphics are better off in pdf or another format like cbz.

The only way to zoom images in ePub seams to be to set the width or height of an image in em. Not very good, but so far it's the only answer to this question.

I tried zooming with Stanza last night, and was able to zoom in on images (and a page). It wasn't a permanent zoom, they use it as UI for setting the font size; but it will work in a pinch.

It's too bad that image zooming isn't available in iBooks. It seems a pretty obvious feature. I am in the middle of a book right now (Blind Descent by James Tabor - great book, btw) but it has a couple of chapters with photos in it that i'd love to be able to see larger. I'd use Stanza but use Calibre to organize and transfer my books and am loathe to have to manually add books into iTunes for Stanza to use.

This is exactly the issue I'm trying to resolve, though I see it's been several months since the last post in this thread. I have a serious need for readers to be able to zoom in on illustrations I'll have in an ePub book since I want them to be able to examine the details in them. I'd rather not have to rework all the illustrations so that each part is a separate full-screen image, but so far I have not found any reader that lets someone zoom in on pictures in an ePub..though I've heard the iPad may do it now.
The dearth of responses (and lack of success) I've had trying to find a way seems to indicate that the developers of eReaders, or the apps themselves, haven't realized how valuable it would be to be able to zoom on images in an ePub, and at the moment the image will be only as large as whatever the page size on a given device is (much as I love my EVO, a full page image scrunched to the size of a eReader app is ridiculous. The default viewer on the phone lets me zoom perfectly, but no-go when you're reading an eBook).
If anyone knows of a reader or app that has pinch/zoom capability and that will work on Android/iPhone/iPad readers, please let me know.

I can't speak to the Android platform. I tested with the Winnie The Pooh copy that comes with iBooks. When I double-tap on an illustration, iBooks opens it in a separate window, I guess is the best way to describe it. I am able to zoom in and out with no problems.
