[ I decided to read the Miles Vorkosigan stuff in series chronological order, rather than published order. )

Actually, that's the way Ms. Bujold recommends. Personally I don't pay any attention to published date. Chronological or just dipping into the middle works for me....

I keep meaning to get back into this series but every time I look at the books sitting on my reader I remember the 180 odd pages of info dump with nothing actually happening that was the start to War of Honor and I just can't get the motivation up.
Does the series get any better after that? Does the pace pick up a little? Is there less info dumping? Last edited by PKFFW; 06-12-2015 at 12:40 AM. Reason: typo |

War of Honor was particularly bad. Yes, they get back on form, IMO.

Anyway, I DID download and will try out Honor Harrington, too. I'm not just shilling for Miles. |

I don't think you need to apologize too much. I have these books on my *must read* list. I think I'll tag it as the series of focus in 2016. Well, only if I really enjoy reading the first book, which I plan to do in 3Q2015.

If you think you can commit to the full series by its (well-deserved) rep alone, then starting from CORDELIA'S HONOR is recommended as the elder protagonists tower over the entire series, even when not present. The way the series is structured, I fully expect the focus to extend to the next generation of Vorkossigans soon. |

I was going to suggest the volume "Borders of Infinity" ... Which has Miles in a hospital bed, recollecting past exploits. The first one is "Mountains of Mourning", which indeed usually grabs people! The third one is the one I ran into online, which grabbed me, the single tale "Borders of Infinity" (yes, confusing, so make sure you are buying a volume of 3 tales, not just the single tale -- tho that alone is worth it too!). Then go back and start with his mother, to learn where he gets his chutzpah & charisma. . Baen had them all on a CD at one point, tho that was when volume "Cryoburn" was sold as a hardback. I bought that, just to get the CD. |
