In this case, fantasy author Vera Nazarian (former Marion Zimmer Bradley protégée, now runs her own sf/fantasy small press doing reprints of well-known authors and new stuff), seems to be using the KDP Select exclusive-or-else-but-you-can-offer-free-for-5-days-out-of-every-90 for promoting her books one day at a time.

The Duke In His Castle is a fantasy novella by Vera Nazarian, described as being "dark and lush" and compared to a cross between Hans Christian Anderson and Angela Carter. So "gothic decadence" like Brian Stableford's newer works seems like a fairly good subgenre category to put it in.

This was a 2008 Nebula Award finalist, and it's also illustrated by the author herself, who incidentally has been undergoing financial difficulties, so if you end up reading this, it probably wouldn't hurt to leave a nice review if you enjoyed the story, or look at Norilana Books' other titles (mostly print, but some e-books DRM-free @ Amazon, B&N, and Smashwords) which Nazarian can't freebie without the other authors' permission.

That can backfire - make sure you just start at her blog, if you choose to do this, so Amazon doesn't think she is emailing links or posting on spam sites.
