Crowdfunding: E Ink e-reader that can also be used as a PC monitor

The latest competing for your backing dollars comes from a small group of Hong-Kong based inventors, who launched their "world's first EINK computer monitor" fund-matching campaign on Indiegogo. The idea is that you take a regular e-book reader with a standard E Ink screen, and connect it to your computer to function as a secondary monitor.

From the description:

Quote:
It is the world's first EINK Ebook Reader and Monitor 2in1 device. We call it CBR. After the campaign ending, we will reveal what CBR stands for to our contributors.

The purpose of this project is to use a regular EINK ebook reader as a second computer monitor, displaying text or images that are displayed on LCD/TV monitors onto the EINK ebook reader device. It’s better for the eyes and much more readable for the user.
Color me a shade of skeptic, but I cannot quite see yet how the slow refresh and relatively low resolution of an E Ink screen could be any useful in a standard desktop work environment.

If it were:

- larger (able to show at least 8.5" x 11" @100%)
- included stylus support

It'd be a huge boon for our proofreaders.

Me either.

Maybe for a Raspberry Pi though.

Hackers have pulled off a similar but better trick with a Nook Touch:

More tricks

If the IndieGogo project shown above offered a wireless solution i would defintely go for it.

Big FAIL IMO. The screen looks washed out like a pre-Pearl eInk screen. The refresh rate would be horribly slow and in many offices you would need to include some kind of front lighting. Perhaps if it was hooked up in a laptop configuration it would be useful for outdoors in the daytime where a normal laptop or tablet would be washed out, but then it would be useless in low light times. Nah, just a huge FAIL.

Great idea ! That is exactly what I am looking for.
They should demo it with the latest 13.3" panel from E-ink.
Most people are ignorant, and of course do not know how bad back-lit screens are for their brains.

It is also possible with the Ony Boox : bigger screen, so more convenient.

If it would be a laptop with an e-ink screen, I would be very tempted.

I can think of two situations where this type of display may work:

A thin model with a large enough viewable area could be clipped to a laptop's or tablet's screen, for use outdoors. This sort of setup would be useful for field work.

A wireless model may be good secondary monitor for extended periods of reading, as well as to refer to or transcribing information. It would be more useful than an ereader since it would display information using standard PC software.

no one finds it weird that the fundraising goal is only $2000?

Any kind of drag and drop would not work - the refresh rate is too slow.

If they use the 1-bit mode (black and white only), no problem.

So what are they going to do with a lousy $2000?
