Depression Bay
Well actually Deception Bay, Depression Bay is one of the local nicknames. One of the nicer ones.
This was a town in the middle of nowhere with cheap land where the state government in their wisdom decided to build a lot of public housing. Imagine - public housing, no local employment, no amenities, no public transport... I think what the government did might be more kindly called sweeping a problem under the carpet. Locals call the place D Bay. I have lived here 20 years and lately there are people trying to make the place a bit upmarket. These people decided Deception Bay was not the best name for such a beautiful place, and suggested its name be changed to Endeavour Bay. As if! We don't want to live in E Bay!!! Angela |

In 1998 our journey (by rental car and sleeping with 'coupons' in cheap motels) began in New York. Then Philadelphia-Washington-Williamsburg-Blue Ridge Mountains-Chattanooga-Atlanta-Nashville-Memphis-Graceland-Natchez-New Orleans-St Augustine-Kennedy Space Centre-Orlando Disney World.
In 2000 we also had the rental car and motels, and started out in Phoenix, then Tuscon-Santa Fe-Aztec-Colorada-Utah-Monument Valley-Grand Canyon-Meteor Crater-Las Vegas-Sequoia National Forest-Santa Cruz-San José- Monterey-Los Angeles-Santa Monica- Annaheim Disneyland-Pacific Coast Highway-San Diego-Yuma-Arizona Sonora-Saguaropark-Ghost towns-White Sands-Phoenix. Both times we had our 10-12 year old daughter write a few lines + a little drawing each day. I did the same, and this morning when I looked in the traveljournals of these journeys, it was just so cute to see the descriptions of a 10 and later 12 year old of the United States. It was a big event for the three of us. We all loved it. And you know what: I recognized the States: the colour of the houses, the streets……because of the books and movies! Can you image traveling like this? And the first journey when we were on a steamboat on the Mississippi; I actually pinched myself to realize it was true: as a child I read and reread Mark Twain. BTW: we once had a steamboat in our town- the Mississippi Queen, but it was sold a few years ago. We would like to go again, perhaps in the next few years, but then a bit longer. And now I've seen all your beautiful photo's: I'll be planning a new journey around those----Oregon--Honolulu-Mexico-New Jersey-Queensland-Oregon-Ontario-Illonois-Seattle-Anchorage-Georgia-Olympic Peninsula-Illonois-South Florida-Barnsley Town hall- Soll Hull UK and nearer to home: Ghent and Krewerd. It's just too beautiful where you all live, and thanks for the pics! Last edited by desertblues; 02-27-2012 at 01:06 PM. |

I live in a fairly remote, rural part of the Massif Central, in a tiny hamlet comprising just three occupied houses, at an altitude of about 570 metres (1,870 feet) above sea level. We are part of a commune called Latronche (population 137), which is about 10 minutes walk away, that has a small library housed in the mairie. On clear nights, we get a beautiful view of the Milky Way Galaxy, with zero light pollution.
The next nearest commune, called Soursac (population 484), which is about 10 minutes away by car, also has a small library. Our nearest is town, called Neuvic (population 1,887), which is about 15 minutes away by car, has a large library and cinema that regularly shows international films. The local economy is based on forestry (predominantly fast-growing coniferous trees used for timber) and cattle breeding. This region is world-renowned for its breeds of rugged cattle, called Limousin and Salers. Drawings known to be 20,000 year-old, found in the nearby Lascaux Cave, bear a striking resemblance to today's Limousin cattle. Milk from Salers cattle is traditionally used to produce the cheeses known as Cantal and Salers. The pyramid-shaped mountain, that can be seen in the 2nd & 3rd photos, is the Puy Mary, that rises to an altitude of 1,783 metres (5,850 feet, ie over a mile high). List of images:
