Early John Rebus (Ian Rankin) removed from ebook stores?
Having read several of Ian Rankin's newer John Rebus novels I was interested in reading the earlier ones. In mid September I found and purchased the first Rebus novel "knots and Crosses" from waterstones.com. I went back last week to purchase the next novel in the series and all of the Rebus novels are no longer available.
Using AddAll I found them at whsmith.co.uk - except AddAll is far out of date and Ian Rankin is not available there either. How John Rebus or Ian Rankin been banned in the UK? :-) Actually does anyone know why they disappeared and if/when the books will be back? |

I wonder if this is as a result of the dispute between booksellers and Hachette in the UK? (Hachette seeking to control the price of e-books)
I believe Rankin is published by Orion, which is part of the Hachette group. see this post https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99504 |

Yes, that sounds likely. They are all still available on Amazon UK, so you could buy with Kindle for PC and then convert to ePub.

Thank you for the information and for the Amazon UK suggestion. Unfortunately Amazon UK won't sell to me. (I live in the US.)

I wrongly assumed that if you were buying from Waterstones, that you were likely in the UK. Does Amazon US not sell the books?

His early books are now reprints and no ebooks are available yet.

Both WH Smith and waterstones seem to have reduced the totasl numbers of ebooks they are selling very substantially. For example, they have also removed most of the Mccall Smith books from there list. As this has happened at the same time, it appears that they are using the same data base but different pricing.

WH Smith has also just (well, middle of last month) changed their bookstore; it used to be run by OverDrive, but now appears to be an in-house operation, with an even crankier search option, and shoddy organisation.
The old Overdrive-powered one was quirky enough, but they've managed to make it even harder to find things. Whether that too is having an impact on availability, I couldn't say, though. |

McCall Smith's books were definitely removed from WH Smith, Waterstones and Book Depository when the dispute with Hachette started. I put some of his books on my wish list with all 3 websites one night. And the next night when I went to buy they had gone. At the same time, the announcement that they had withdrawn Hachette books came through. Hopefully they will be back soon, in the meantime I will buy through Amazon or use the library.

Early books in the series not available on Amazon US
Unfortunately Amazon US does not sell the early books. In mid-September both Watersones and WHSmith had all of the early ones. I should have purchased all of them then.
