iBooks Author FAQ shows publishing, technical limits
http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/12/01...pple.partners/

Interesting article states that books can be exported in non-proprietary formats including pdf, and free versions of ibook format. Not clear if a flavor of epub is an option.

I might be mistaken but I believe iBooks are published in ePub with Apple's proprietary DRM so this probably means it will publish in ePub(n).

It is epub, though in general it may contain markup that only works in iBooks. DRM is optional in iBookstore.

Why iBooks Author is a big deal for publishers
http://rss.macworld.com/click.phdo?i...0375392e11ff2c

"The current state of affairs in the ebook-building world is not much better. Some print-oriented tools such as Adobe InDesign have been retrofitted to output to ebook format, but the quality of that output is not great. A few writing apps (Pages and Scrivener, to name two) will export to ePub, but their output is also a bit limited and a bit generic. And then there are the open-source tools, such as Sigil, which combine functionality with godawful user interfaces."

Looks like one needs to also look at the EULA from the tool. From the Register http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/01/20/apple_ibooks/

Quote:
The End User Licence Agreement, to which users consent by using the software, requires the output of iBooks Author be distributed only through Apple's retail operation - with Cupertino getting its customary 30 per cent cut - to ensure that only Apple students get the benefit of Apple's largess.

The restriction is displayed when users run iBook Author, but only at the end of the e-book design process. At which point one might be prompted to go back and read the EULA - which wasn't displayed during the installation of the program:

If you charge a fee for any book or other work you generate using this software ... you may only sell or distribute such Work through Apple (e.g., through the iBookstore) and such distribution will be subject to a separate agreement with Apple.

Would that clause still stand if you have then done substantial work to modify the file after it was out of iBooks Author?

It worked for me, the second time through. The trick seems to be to close App Store before the download finishes.

Although I don't know how to verify that everything works as it should. For example 'New' brings up the Template Chooser (same as 'New From Template Chooser...') rather than a blank document.
