Free on Amazon.com also: No Colder Place. Originally published in 1997 by Macmillan. Book 4 in the series.

Quote:
Bill Smith is going undercover again as a favor to an old friend who wants him to investigate thievery on the 40-story Manhattan site of Crowell Construction's latest project. His bricklaying is a little rusty, but passable as he checks out the foreman who's under suspicion. A crane operator has disappeared--along with some heavy machinery. But when a well-orchestrated riot causes the foreman's "accidental" death, Smith plunges into a morass of bribery, blackmail and blood looking for answers. With the help of his Chinese-American partner Lydia Chin, he follows a trail of twisted loyalties, old-fashioned greed and organized crime to its heart-stopping conclusion. Murder--with no end in sight.

S.J. Rozan won the 1998 Anthony Award for No Colder Place.
Other Richard Stark Parker Novels $3.99-$4.27.

Thanks for the initial catch on this, Mort1997! And a thanks to Nightbird for attaching a useful blurb to the US link update-- both the UK & US pages have one of the shortest blurbs I've ever seen on Amazon, and totally useless for anyone not already familiar with the series. The book definitely sounds like something I'd enjoy, (and I may have read another in the series at some point), but I definitely couldn't tell it from the Amazon listing info!

YW, Kent. If there's not much description with the ebook version, look at the older paper copies, which is where I found this one.

Repeat freebie from a little over a year ago by Geraldine Evans: Dying For You (#6 in Rafferty & Llewellyn Procedurals). Originally published by Severn House in 2004.

Quote:
Fancy some light relief after yet another serial killer book about blood, guts and the unspeakable doings of the latest sadist? Then DYING FOR YOU, Geraldine Evans' 6th novel in her Rafferty & Llewellyn Procedural series, should do it.

Detective Inspector Joe Rafferty manages to become chief suspect in his own double murder investigation. And all he’d been doing was looking for love…

It had been his sergeant's wedding that had brought home to him that, far from still being the 'Jack the Lad' of old, he was not only lonely, but in danger of turning into a sad old git. So, with his fortieth birthday on the horizon, he decides it's time to take the initiative.

To this end, he signs up with the Made in Heaven dating agency. Wary of his colleagues discovering his shameful secret, he persuades his more up-market cousin to let him borrow his identity. It's just unfortunate that the first two women with whom he strikes up a rapport should wind up murdered and with himself - or rather his alter ego - in the frame for the crimes.

The Anderson Tapes, Lawrence Sanders' first novel, is $2.99. Sony B&N Originally published in 1970.

Quote:
The explosive debut novel—told entirely through surveillance recordings, eyewitness reports, and other “official” documents—by New York Times bestselling author Lawrence Sanders

New York City. Summer 1968.
Newly sprung from prison, professional burglar John Anderson is preparing for the biggest heist of his criminal career. The mark is a Manhattan luxury apartment building with the tony address of 535 East Seventy-Third Street. Enlisting a crew of scouts, con artists, and a getaway driver, Anderson orchestrates what he believes to be a foolproof plan. To pull off the big score, he needs one last thing: the permission of the local mafia, who expect a piece of the action.

But no one inside Anderson’s operation knows that the police have recorded their conversations. The New York Police Department has hatched a plot of its own—but even its task force may not be enough to stop such a cunningly planned robbery.

All Booked Up (A Basil and Hortense Killingsley Mystery) by Terrie Curran

Only weeks ago, Basil Killingsley was looking at a rare old book in the Smedley Library. Now he is back to take another look, and the book is gone—gone from the shelves, gone from the computer listings, gone from the memories of everyone who works there.
Basil is as indefatigable as he is eccentric. He will not rest until he finds the book and proves to all concerned that he is not imagining things. But more than Basil’s (considerable) ego is involved here: it is not just any book that is missing, but a 1495 Wynkyn de Worde edition of Ranulf Higden’s Policronicon, a book of historical and literary significance that is crucial to Basil’s research.
As Basil and his equally formidable wife, Hortense, are busy searching the Smedley for clues, members of the staff keep turning up murdered, more books mysteriously appear on the shelves, and a rich donor gets more than he bargained for in library operations.
But even the cleverest criminal is no match when the Killingsleys, with uncanny common sense and humor, apply their scholarly wits to matters odd and lethal.

First: Thank you for mentioning this title. I wanted it and so I 'purchased' it.

Unfortunately, "All Booked Up" is all messed up.

A horribly formatted ebook, in which the author should be roundly - and rightfully - embarrassed.

This is a warning to anyone contemplating getting this one.
