Unexpected Book downloaded without purchase/request

Hi,

I have had a Kobo Glo for a couple of months and suddenly some adult fiction automatically downloaded to my device even though I didn't purchase it and am sure no-one initiated the download.

This has happened twice and I don't want this to happen as my kids also read from my device. My sister has now started a brand new account and the same thing has happened to her - 2 adult books automatically downloaded.

I have tried doing a Google search and looked around the forum but can't see anyone else with this problem? I have now written to Kobo support to see if they can help, but am hoping for some wisdom here.

Thanks in advance.

Does your purchase history show anything?

Thanks for your interest - no, the first thing I checked was the purchase history and it does not show anything apart from books I actually have purchased.

This sounds like a PREVIEW or RECOMMENDATION and not a full book.

how old are your kids? i guess at least one of them is a male teen?

edit: no wait... if its "shades of grey" or something like that, it even could be a girl!!

I've had uninitiated downloads before, but it's always been previews.

That doesn't help if you still want to keep adult material off the Kobo. I wonder if there's a way to block adult content at the account level.

I'd open a ticket with Kobo and have them investigate what caused the material to download, and ask them to put a restriction on the account, telling them it downloaded to readers that children read.

Heh, I could see those comments about "accidentally downloaded" from a mile away. No harm done.

Unfortunately the kiddies are 7 years old, and fortunately they would have no idea and probably switch off as soon as they read a boring story about a tradesman knocking on the door... YAWN.

If it happens again I will check to see if it is a preview versus the full book.

Thanks.

Keep the WiFi off and if you can, try to get the device to forget the WiFi password. if you cannot get the device to forget the WiFi password, then change the WiFi password in the router. This will prevent the kids from turning on WiFi and getting porn on the device (even if it is only a preview).

Okay so someone in Kobo is having a big joke .....

Yep - a mysterious book has also appeared in my account and you can tell by the title what sort it is: Seven Nights in a Rogues Bed, Sons of Sin 1!!!

It only shows in My Library (as en epub) and doesn't show in Purchase History. Of course it doesn't show in Purchase History - because I DID NOT BUY THE DARN THING!!

Anyway I haven't downloaded it, and nor will I. But I'm not going through the hassle of telling Kobo because it's in a non Aus account. I will however monitor my bank statement to ensure that the cost hasn't been charged.

(Also posting this in the Discounts thread with a view to alerting others to check their Library for odd bod books that they didn't purchase)

As I say ... someone in Kobo is having a craic!!

What was the book titles and author names and where are you geographically located? (feel free to PM them to me if you like)

Either of them same book mentioned by Lynx-lynx?

Easy way to tell if it is a preview is to view the Table of contents and see if you can access all the chapters, if you cannot (it may say "chapter locked") then it would indicate it is a preview.

I got THAT book too! I don't think its a preview, but I haven't read it.

Thought I might have accidentally bought it!

i haven't been on the Kobo store for ages, and as it wasn't in my purchases I decided it was an account glitch, as I've also got some books on my reader that aren't in my library.

Hi Lynx-lynx,

I'm in Oz, I haven't been to the store for ages, when was it dropped?
I'm going to watch my account, I think it will disappear after a while.

Mine is an encrypted Kepub.

Whats the advantage of a non-Oz account?

Update:
I just checked, I have an option to download it now, DRM epub

I Googled and found this on an Aussie site:
"Only $139 (usually $159) plus 2 free e-books will be added to your Kobo library. Free e-books include 'Rotten Gods' by Gregg Barron & 'Seven Nights in a Rogues Bed' by Anna Campbell - while stocks last."

See http://www.angusrobertson.com.au/kobo-glo.
