What is "Browse Mode"?

In the Preferences subdialog called "Look and Feel," there is an option that says: "Number of covers to show in browse mode (needs restart):"

To what is this referring. I looked in the help manual and found nothing about a "browse mode."

Related to this question is another question: Is there a way to preview documents as you highlight the row without having to open them up? I'm talking primarily about PDF files.

I think "browse mode" refers to the cover browser. You get that by selecting the arrow button on the lower right of the window.

There's no way that I know of to preview files without opening them, although you could possibly use the comments field in the metadata (or a custom comments field) to contain a preview of the book.

This applies to the 'cover Browser' , toggle the button at the bottom with the curved arrow
Note that the cursor position in Library view is synched wit the cover browser. You click near the edges, to flip through covers. when you exit the browser, the cursor is now at the last book (cover) viewed.

The "browser mode" is the cover flow view of book covers. It is initially hidden and is above the book table. There is also an option to have it appear in a separate window.

No. The only way to see a book is to open it. You can change the file association in preferences so that it does not open PDF files in calibre's ebook-viewer.
