Sony and Bol.com to enter Dutch ebook market

Sony and the Dutch online retailer Bol.com (the 'Amazon of the Netherlands') have announced a press conference on August 26th. According to the press release the two companies will jointly 'introduce digital reading' to the Dutch readers. Bol.com will start selling ebooks and Sony will provide the ereaders.

The ebooks sold by Bol.com will be delivered in the ePub format, with Adobe DRM. This means that the ebooks can also be read on the BeBook, Cybook and other ereaders that support DRM'ed ePub.

At least 1.000 popular Dutch titles will be available in electronic format when the ebook shop opens, on September 1. At this moment, only about 600 (new and older) Dutch books are available in Mobipocket format through ebook.nl.

The cooperation is good news for Dutch ebook enthousiasts, especially Bol.com has quite some marketing power. The online store has about 2 million customers, which is about 12,5 percent of the Dutch population. It is expected that Dutch publishers will make more ebooks available soon, but unfortunately, most of them will be quite expensive compared to the printed editions. It is not expected that Bol.com will discount ebooks, like Amazon does.

More info (in Dutch) can be found on eReaders.nl

Great news!

I know a few people who are interested in getting an ebook reader, but the lack of Dutch books is holding them back from purchasing one.

Let's first worry about availability, then we'll worry about price

Can't wait till the 27th!

That is awesome news. That means that Sony is not leaving and will have new models.

If the PRS-505 is going to continue as Sony's low-end reader then I guess they could announce the PRS-505 for the Netherlands on the 26th and new devices for the US in October (as usual). However, I think it more likely that they will announce their new range on or before the 26th and make it available in all markets that currently have the PRS-505 in addition to new markets like the Netherlands.

I do hope they'll announce it in more provinces than only Holland... And the 505 isn't available yet here, in the Netherlands.

I know what you mean, but I suspect you're too subtle for many! :-)

Wow, they will? They are a couple of years late, but I am happy they will finally start selling them here. 's about friggin' time.

edit: also, it seems I am a month late for this thread, but still in time for the event

We both are AZ... But is anyone amused by the language of this release:

"introduce digital reading' to the Dutch readers."

Impressive given that the trailblazer in the market (iRex) is in fact a Dutch company :-)

Bebook is a dutch product, too, from endless ideas, a dutch company that has licensed the Jinke reader.

From the timing, I guess that Sony will introduce the 300 and 600 readers that they will present officially today on their press conference.
