Exclamation Free (Kindle DRM-free) Leopard's Daughter by Lee Killough [Myth-based Fantasy] +3 KDP

Today's KDP exclusive-or-else backlist sf/fantasy self-pub slushpile surprise is a Warner Questar-published 1987 novel from an author whom I've never read and have no idea how I remember her name because none of her bibliography looks even vaguely familiar.

But for some baffling reason I do, and here are her writing credits at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database.

Also some other backlist sf/fantasy (mostly short stories) and a few romance and mystery after.

The Leopard's Daughter, by Lee Killough, is an African-mythology based warrior coming-of-age/adventure fantasy.

Free without DRM for who knows how long @ Amazon main, UK, DE, ES, FR, IT.

Apparently Killough also used to write sf/fantasy+mystery crossovers (proto-paranormal investigative/urban fantasy before the subgenre developed into what it is now) and now sells them at $2.99 a pop on Amazon and Smashwords.

Description
In an ancient Africa of verdant Sahara plains, warrior woman Jeneba Karamoke has grown up scorned by her people because her father was a leopard man. When she rescues a party of fellow warriors from cannibalistic monster half-men, she hopes it will finally win acceptance for her.

But no...in order to prove she isn't lying about the vanished hero Tomo Silla's part in their capture by the half men she must make Tomo face the tribe. Can she find him, and then survive more monsters, foreign tribes, and a curse laid on a fabled city to bring him back alive?

A number of previously-printed short stories by sf/fantasy authors and one collection have shown up as temporary freebies:

Iain Rowan, a new-ish writer with fantasy/horror/crime stories in anthologies by Night Shade Books et al. has 8 of them collected in Ice Age and you can pick up Sighted, Lilies, and Driving in Circles individually.

A non-KDP short story also available via Smashwords is One Step Closer.

Rowan's books are published by infinity plus, which is the imprint of the now-defunct British SF online magazine, run by Keith Brooke, who freebies one of his own sf technothriller stories, Sweats via KDP.

There's also a permafreebie sampler anthology of the authors he represents, Infinities, available via Smashwords and thence to every place that SW distributes.

Doranna Durgin, formerly a Baen author, freebies Emerging Legacy, a tie-in tale to her fantasy novel Wolverine's Daughter.

She is holding a 99 cent holiday sale on three titles (two former Baen Webscription, now yanked from catalogue), available at B&N and Amazon without DRM: A Feral Darkness (Celtic myth-based fantasy/horror), Seer's Blood (Appalachian coming-of-age fantasy), Making the Rules (action/adventure romantic suspense)

Sarah A. Hoyt, a Baen/Random House author who writes sf/fantasy under that name, mysteries as Sarah d'Almeida, and romance as Elise Hyatt, has a single humorous-looking sf story, The Serpent's Tale for free.

She has 3 separate collections of 5 short stories each going for $2.99 a pop on Smashwords (and thence to everywhere SW distributes), a savings on the 99 cents she charges for them individually. And you can buy a 4-book bundle of her Elves and Shakespeare historical fantasy series for $14 directly from Baen.

Patricia Ryan, a fellow MR-member author, has the 2nd book in her Penguin-published medieval romance Fairfax Family series, Heaven's Fire, for free (DRM-ed). The first book is still available via various non-Amazon outlets, for who knows how much longer.

Her other non-KDP books which are on 99 cent sale across all venues (including DRM-free at Smashwords) are Silken Threads, 1st in Wexford Family medieval romantic suspense series, and Still Life With Murder, 1st in Nell Sweeney Gilded Age mysteries. The latter has been freebied previously in a number of venues, so check your archives and wherever you keep your Smashwords downloads if you think you might have picked it up.

Josh Lanyon, an m/m mystery & romance writer who's given us several freebies via ARE countdowns and published by Carina Press, among others, offers a short story, Limited Engagement from his print collection.

Similarly, Bonnie Dee, another Carina Press author, freebies one of her backlist paranormal romances from erotica publisher Liquid Silver KDPed: Shifter, P.I.

Finally, here's a Joe Konrath/Jack Kilborn mystery which may be a self-pub rather than backlist, but everyone talks about him so you might as well pick it up: Banana Hammock: A Harry McGlade Mystery.

I bought all of the Nell Sweeney Gilded Age mysteries (except the first, which I got for free) in March and they were about $2.39 each at Kobo, and about $2.99 (IIRC) at Amazon. I notice they're now $5.59 at Amazon (and $3.99 at Kobo)
