Anyone knows what " beating up the wine to freshen it up" (page 11) means?
I guess it is not essential for the rest of the story, but I googled it and can't find it. |

I don't know, and trying to deduce meaning from context was fruitless. It reads like a complete non sequitur. Monty Python could have written that paragraph.

You know how people refer to letting wine "breathe"? Beating the wine could be a way of hastening that process. These days you can buy devices that you attach the neck of the wine bottle so that when you pour, the device aerates the wine to speed up the "breathing" process. If you beat wine - like an egg - you are essentially aerating it. |

Or it could be a means of reviving it if it goes a bit flat before use.

That was the first thing I thought of, but the context makes that make as little sense as anything else I could imagine. Something about a sign post? Huh?

Having read the different (brutal) treatments of the wine, I don't have a high opinion of British palates in those days...... |

I think it's a tribute to the sturdy British constitution that they were able to drink the stuff after such treatment and not poison themselves!

I guess I'm missing it. I see references in that guide to beating some other ingredients and putting them in a wine cask, but nothing about beating the wine itself nor any sign of how it would fit in the context of the book. :-(
