Kobo is developing a 7.8 eReader
This news came from Good e-Reader.
I was uncertain if this information was true given there was a lot of rumors of Kobo developing a new eReader without proof. There is proof on the specs on the OET Exhibits List: https://apps.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/repor...c_id=NOIKBN709 Choose the Test Report_DTS rev report page 7. I am very exited that Kobo is finally coming out with a large eReader! Last edited by RZetlin; 06-25-2016 at 02:20 PM. |

The cross-check question to ask is: does someone manufacture an 7.8" eInk screen, that is, does eInk produce them at all? There's been no mention so far of larger screens so far, so maybe 7.8" is the device size, but not the display size...?

No, the news didn't come from BadeReader. It comes from the site they ripped off.

Holy molybdenum, so excited! I - love- my H2O and so excited to upgrade! There is a huge market for Kobo readers that is not being filled by the kindles and this larger size is the sign of a company that is actively listening to the customers! Take all my money now!!!

I can't see anything in the reports about it having an e-ink screen.

That's 1200mAh and is far too small a capacity for a large LCD/AMOLED display. It's also a bit small for an eInk display, actually (the H2O supposedly has a 1700mAh battery). Last edited by pickyaxe; 06-25-2016 at 09:04 PM. |

The paperwork says "electronic display device" (or something close to that) which is what the paperwork for the Oasis says, so no obvious indications it's not e-ink. As to battery size, maybe they're pulling an Amazon and figuring they can get away with a smaller battery |

I've never heard of them making one, however. |

Going by my memory of eInk's Carta datasheet, they manufacture the line of displays in sizes from 1.44 to 13.3 inches so a 7.8" display would fall well within those limits. Now if it used Mobius...

David, there is a fine but sometimes crucial difference between range and particular size. Being in range doesn't mean that a specific size is in manufacturing, as there might be no reasonable market for some sizes. Some reports in the past months suggest that the market for ebooks isn't that bright (albeit I'm sceptic about this), and with Amazon trying to fish at the low end, it will be interesting whether Kobo goes for the other end with a new screen size that would fragment the market even more, as growth is questionable.
