Borders to be Sold?
DETROIT - Borders could become the latest victim of the credit squeeze, announcing Thursday that it may put itself up for sale. Rival Barnes & Noble, meanwhile, saw fourth-quarter profits drop 9 percent as the industry struggles with intense competition from discounters.
Shares in Borders tumbled more than 39 percent as the nation's second-largest bookseller said it was considering options including the sale of the company or certain divisions, and that it had lined up $42.5 million in financing to help it keep running through the year. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080320/...U8CkWDW_xeW7oF |

Huh, That's kind of suprising. I don't see how WalMart or Target can compete in the book department. Sure WalMart and Target carry the best seller list but Borders and B&N have a much larger selection in their stores. Maybe people are buying more books from Amazon? I walk into WalMart or Target and their book selection is usually generally pathetic.

I think Target and some Wal Marts have a quite good selection of books, Sam's Club too

My Target has a pretty good selection if what you are looking for is fairly recent and popular. It goes a bit beyond just the best-seller list but if a book has national publicity, it's probably at my Target. Stores like B&N & Borders stock a lot of older titles. If the new stuff is the biggest money maker then I wouldn't be surprised if the discounters are taking a chunk. The bookstore is a special trip for most people but they're at their big box discounter probably 2-4x/month. Easy to just grab a copy of Oprah's latest book club selection while you're picking up laundry detergent.
