Free (Kindle DRM-free) Murder at the War by Mary Monica Pulver [SCA Mystery] + KDP

Something really nice in today's KDP Select exclusive-or-else slushpile trawl today, even if it's not sf/fantasy (though kind of tangentially related, since sf/fantasy people including Marion Zimmer Bradley, Diana L. Paxson, and Poul Anderson helped set up the Society for Creative Anachronism).

Also, the non-mystery reading horror and romance readers should be happy (especially as it looks like there's some quality reprints coming out from the former category), plus there's some non-fiction if you like celebrity biographies.

Anyway, Mary Monica Pulver who's also currently published as cozy writer Monica Ferris (I forget which is the real name or if they're both pseudonyms) offers the 1st in her Peter Brichter series, which used to be popular enough to be published in hardcover.

This novel is one that I went and got from the library, specifically because I'd heard that this one was set at one of those SCA historical recreation events (the annual Pennsic War, IIRC) and I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

It turned out to live up to its promise, and I quite enjoyed reading it, to the point where I also went specifically looking for a copy in the used bookshop afterward (it being long out of print by the time that I read it).

So you should all go download it and give the author a nice ranking boost, because it's a very likeable and fun work (I tried the sequels, but they didn't grab me nearly as much, although they were quite decent mysteries as well) and I personally give it a high recommend if you like well-done murder mysteries with a slightly quirky setting and some nice historical bits in them.

I don't know who this Nathan Kross is and I don't care (though I suspect a certain amount of Amazon Author Central trolling, judging from the provided bio, which I rate as the second best set of brazen author lies I've come across thus far; the 1st place honour goes to this gentleman here, whose novel of course I downloaded when it was free, because it deserved a ranking bump for creativity), because this looks thoroughly cracktastic and I'm downloading it for the lulz: The Supervillain Sonnets He's also got: The Space Admiral's Tale "from The Canterbury Tales in Space" which is also being downloaded for the lulz, and seems to have a decent grasp of rhyme and meter.

This is another one I'm getting for the lulz, and I like the provided biography of David Wooster PhD, who says that he based this thrilling yet educational novella about cholera on a true story: The Secret Life of Water: A Microbiology Tale

That's everything where I recognized someone's name, or it looked interesting and their claimed author creds checked out, or it looked cracktastic enough to get for the lulz.

I echo the recommendation, and thanks, OP, for the tip! I bought and read this series back when the books were first being published in paperback and enjoyed them very much. I'm more of a mystery reader, and only occasionally dip into fantasy or sci-fi, but I very much enjoyed the view into the SCA in the first book. I might even re-buy the others that are available from Smashwords, even if no coupon is forthcoming, although $3.99 IS about the max I'll pay just to be able to clear a few DTBs off my shelves.

ATDrake Wizzard Posts: 11,517 Karma: 33048258 Join Date: Mar 2010 Location: Roundworld Device: Kindle 2 International, Sony PRS-T1, BlackBerry PlayBook, Acer Iconia	A few decent enough late additions which popped up in the intervening hours and may or may not still be free tomorrow: Previously-featured Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine Reader's Choice Award-winner Dave Zeltserman offers a Five Star-published mystery/thriller, 2nd in Bill Shannon series: Bad Karma He, along with 15 other mostly-established thriller writers, contributes to the anthology: Intrigue (Stories of Suspense) Previously featured Canadian mystery writer Mobashar Qureshi offers a short story: Hemlar and the Telephone Repair Man Justin Luke Zirilli, who has been picked up by Amazon's AmazonEncore imprint, offers a short story which ties into his gay contemporary fiction novel whose sequel will be the AmazonEncore release: Todd's Major Meltdown (Gulliver's Travelers) Sable Grey, who has had a few novellas published by Cobblestone Press, which is available via Fictionwise, offers a paranormal romance: Demon Heart I must say that overall she has rather nice covers which fit her chosen genre, which tends to be rare for self-pub; even for self-pub with a few printed works and thus some experience in seeing decent covers on their titles. Penumbra Publishing who have an ISFDB entry offers an epic quest fantasy by Andrew Arrowsmith. They seem very new and I have no idea what their quality control is like, but hopefully it will be decent on: The Realms of Beliar: The Sword Myndarit The sword, incidentally, is a talking sword if you like that kind of thing. Since I mentioned the previous volume in fellow Canadian Cindy Bouchard's probably self-pubbed historical family drama epic set in BC, it's only fair to tell you that one of the sequels is now also free if you picked the earlier one up: The Kingdom Was Lost 1915 (Princes of the North) Speaking of probably self-pubbed Canadiana, this is also free for those of you who may be interested in it: Volume 4: True Ghost Stories from Canada & The Rockies (Joe Kwon's True Ghost Stories from Around the World) This one I'm getting because the sample read decently enough and I like quasi-academic things or attempts thereof, so if you've an interest in reconstructed Anglo-Saxon poetry with commentary and notes, you may also want to give a try to : Hengest (Lost Sagas) Enjoy, if any of the above looks like it might be your kind of thing.
