Smile new member saying hello/needs help

Hello all,
I am an elementary school principal that is starting a kindle book/magazine club hoping to elevate the interest in reading amongst my boys. I will run two groups. One will be 10 and 11 year olds and the other group will be 12 and 13 year olds. I need some good recommendations of books that may interest them. Thank you in advance for any assistance.

The list is heavy on the scifi scale:

1. The Foundation series by Isaac Asimov
2. Harry Potter, of course

I dunno, Neko has young teens, she will probably be along shortly with a long list.

Alas, J K Rowling won't allow the Harry Potter series to be released as ebooks. So there are no legal copies available.

I'd suggest the "Tom Swift" books which I've uploaded here. Great fun, especially if you're a young teenager.

There are tons of Newbury award books to look for electronically.

My daughter, 11 loves the following:

The Kindom Keepers
Gregory the Overlander
Hoot
Maximum Ride (all 4 books)
etc.

Not sure how many of these are available as e. I know the Maximum Ride by Patterson are available.

Don't get so hung up on the Kindle as a device and forget that the Kindle allows you to read any book in MobiPocket format. The classics are still the classics. So grab yourself some of those -- originally uploaded to Project Gutenberg. Many have been converted to MobiPocket format and uploaded to this very site. Others have been uploaded here in Sony format, and the uploader may be willing to create the MobiPocket version if asked. (And to be fair, you can find many of these at Feedbooks and ManyBooks.

How about Dr. Doolittle? Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson. Or Treasure Island.

There are lots of biographies out there. And Kipling's Just So Stories. And Howard Pyle's terrific books: Book of Pirates, The Story of the Champions of the Round Table, and The Adventures of Robin Hood.

If you want to go with more contemporary books, you will find a large selection of juvenile fiction available at Amazon.com. I just read The Mysterious Benedict Society. It features 10-14 year old kids and would be appropriate for both age groups. There's even a sequel available in Kindle format.

Seems like your school librarian should be actively contributing to recommendations. You might also approach a nearby university that offers a Library Science degree and ask a professor if this project might be appropriate for independent study for a student. The LS student can help by finding appropriate books, downloading and formatting for the Kindle, building thematic reading lists, etc.

You might consider storing related books on SD cards to be inserted into the Kindle. Small capacity SD cards are very inexpensive. A "pirates" card. A "knights" card. A card with SF books. An "explorers" card. OOOh, the possibilities here.

Check out this list of fiction for boys: http://oldfashionededucation.com/fictionforboys.htm (Yes, even the traditional school system can benefit from the homeschooling movement!)
