A new reader on the scene!

New E-Newspaper Reader Echoes Look of the Paper

The electronic newspaper, a large portable screen that is constantly updated with the latest news, has been a prop in science fiction for ages. It also figures in the dreams of newspaper publishers struggling with rising production and delivery costs, lower circulation and decreased ad revenue from their paper product.

While the dream device remains on the drawing board, Plastic Logic will introduce publicly on Monday its version of an electronic newspaper reader: a lightweight plastic screen that mimics the look — but not the feel — of a printed newspaper.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/08/te...ref=technology

Plastic Logic’s first display, while offering a screen size that is 2.5 times larger than the Kindle, weighs just two ounces more and is about one-third the Kindle’s thickness.

It uses a flexible, lightweight plastic, rather than glass, a technology first developed at Cambridge University in England. Plastic Logic, based in Mountain View, Calif., was spun off from that project.

Gah, "Sony's eReader" and picture of a PRS-500. Can't journalists do even a little homework these days?

... and I didn't see any actual hard specs on the screen size, just an ambiguous "2.5 times larger than the Kindle." What's that, a 15" diagonal screen? Smokes, that would be friggin awesome! No mention of cost either, though if they're quoting the uber-high rate of the iLiad with newspaper subscription then they might be marketing for that level too. You'd think the newspapers could somehow be encouraged to subsidize the cost, considering the amount of money they'll save in printing costs will be phenomenal if they get even 25% of their subscribers onto this service; i.e., printing, delivery, material costs, etc. Though if NRC is any indication, they're pocketing all the savings and more!

Guess we'll wait and see if this thing actually makes it out the door for that matter.

You're thinking of Polymer Vision. Plastic Logic is a completely different company with their own "flavor" of flexible display.

I think the factor is ment on the area not on the diagonal. That is a 4 times bigger area has just a double as large diagonal. That is Sqrt(2.5)*6" = 9.4" in my calculation

The device, which is unnamed, uses the same technology as the Sony eReader and Amazon.com’s Kindle, a highly legible black-and-white display developed by the E Ink Corporation.
They show a picture of the 500. So that must mean that the Kindle is not Vizplex since the 500 is not as well. What a botch job by the author. And as Igorsk said, We have a picture of the 500 and it's being called the Sony eReader.

It's a lost cause. eReader and Sony are both going to lose their trademarks at this rate.

There's a picture here, although I think it's just a "mock-up".

There is another thread on this device with a video demo of the thing. It looks pretty sweet... except for the touch screen interface to change pages. They didn't really show if there were any hard buttons on it though.

On the high resolution picture, the link to which can be found here, there does appear to be a couple buttons on each side.
