Buying Kindle books for the iPhone in Australia - a success story

[Note, I personally do not have an iPhone, and am not likely to, this was not performed by me.]

This is exactly what was done (and may possibly have application to other countries)

Change iTunes store to US (down bottom of iTunes). This logs you out
of your oz account. (I guess if you didn't have oz account, just
download iTunes and select the US store).

Once in US store, go to the app store, find a free app and click buy
(I browsed for the Kindle app seeing that was what I wanted).

You then get a "log in or sign up" option.

Choose sign up. It will ask you to agree to the user agreement then
take you to a details page where amongst the payment options you
should have "none" (presumably because you chose a free product, so I
guess it would work with their free song of the week too). Otherwise
you'd need a gift certificate or coupon code or US cc (though they do
accept paypay, no idea if they check if your paypal is US based) You
have to have an email (I used my freemail account so no pesky country id), US
address and phone number (though I made the phone up apart from the
area code which matched the addy).

After the account is created, you get sent a verification email and
have to verify then I purchased the free app and plugged my iphone
into iTunes and it synced fine, so I guess iTunes doesn't care where
you bought stuff when syncing. Though I'm guessing I'd have to log
into the US account to get updates to that app.

Then went to amazon and made a new account with my freemaill addy.

Then logged out of that, logged into my normal amazon account and sent
my freemail account a gift certificate.

When got gift cerficate email, logged back into freenauk amazon account
and added the gift certificate to my balance.

Then tried to buy the book I wanted. Got told I didn't have a kindle,
iphone or ipod touch registered.

So then had to enter my freemaill amazon details into the app on the iphone.

Then tried to buy again at amazon and then it asked me for my US
address and phone. (it must've synced over the 3g network at that
point because I didn't have wireless turned on)

Once did that all good and worked fine.

Switched to wireless on the iphone and opened the app again and the
book was available for download and just worked like stanza or ereader.

Interesting, I've just installed this app on my ipod touch out of curiosity.

I was wondering how well it would all work..

Works great - you also can have access to all your books not purchased at Amazon through either Calibre if you use it, or by converting your ebooks with stanza and uploading them at Bookworm/Oreilly and then you can access then through your iphone/itouch using stanza's mobile instructions. Both solutions work well.

cheers

While you did all that I walked in to a bookstore and purchased 5 books. Looks like I can read them fine and then pass them on to a friend.

Well, some people don't have bookshops nearby. I could walk to one, but it would take several hours to get there.

The chance that any such shop has as big a selection (or much of a selection at all) is a big fat zero, too.

Plus, I'd like to see you carry all those around in your pocket.

Haha. Fair enough. Well I work in a bookshop and let me tell you something I learned a while ago - the selection, even in a small country bookshop, is more than any man can read. When you stop being so picky you'll discover wonderful stories within the covers of what looks bland and boring.

Thanks for posting, I was wondering if that app is any good. I've been keeping an eye on it but wanted to hear a bit more anecdote and reviews before I pulled the trigger.

Well, you might be that slow, but I'm not.

Hi, guys. I tried creating a new account with an us address, but it wants a payment method and once you start doing that you fill in your billing address and you get stuck....
I don't see there any none option when registering. Any ideas?

Did you do it with a free product? I think that was the trick...
