OverDrive to Adopt epub

I found this press release from OverDrive interesting for several reasons. One is that it revealed some details about OverDrive's business that I didn't know. Another is that it gives a glimpse of Adobe's epub/ADEPT/Digital Editions strategy and how it all relates to end users.

This seems odd, since part of OverDrive's business is dependent on MobiPocket's DRM scheme. Is OverDrive hedging its bets in case Amazon/MobiPocket changes the terms? Or is this shaping up to be some kind of Adobe-and-friends vs. Amazon/MobiPocket smackdown?

I have the same theory. I believe the only way for e-book technology providers to compete against Amazon is to join forces. I wouldn't mind seeing OverDrive and Adobe cooperate, as long as we are talking about an open format like epub.

As I understand it, OverDrive supplies both Adobe and MobiPocket format library e-books (both with DRM). The real looser here is the Kindle. Perhaps the strongest argument for Amazon allowing DRMed MOBI content on the Kindle is MobiPocket library e-books. If the PRS-505 supports Adobe library e-books, then the Kindle will be the only current mainstream E-Ink device without US library e-book support.
