Keeping Pagination in ePub

Hello:

I apologize if this information is fairly well-known, I've done a fair amount of research on the topic but have had trouble finding a straightforward answer, or information that is not several years old.

Our company, an online bookseller, would like to work with our publisher partners to offer their academic textbooks on our website as eBooks in ePub format. However, most professors adopting these textbooks still utilize the physical copies in the classroom, and reference the section page numbers in their syllabi.

Although we still have a lot to learn about ePub, we do know that the reflowable nature of the format means that pagination is, for all intents and purposes, lost once converted to ePub. However, selling these items to our customers without pagination that matches the pagination of the physical copy of the textbook is not going to make our customers happy, if they cannot easily reference the page numbers on their syllabus.

So my question is simple: What is the best method, if any, of maintaining the pagination of the physical book in an ePub format?

Thanks for any help!

In ePub 2 there is no requirement for an eBook Reader to support paper page numbers. However Adobe has an extension used by its readers to do this. Adobe Digital Editions readers are the most popular version on eBooks. See Adobe Digital Editions in our wiki for details. There is a second method in the NCX article that can be used to save these page numbers. It is used by KindleGen when generating their eBooks from ePub files.

Note that some text books want even closer conformance to the hardcopy book. See our wiki article on Fixed layout ePub for details. This may be overkill for your needs.

Note also that ePub 3 does provide a method in its navigation elements to have these direct links to the hardcopy version however, not many readers exist that support ePub 3 at all.

You are welcome. Sorry for the multiple posts but I was researching your request and posting as I went. As I thought more about it I took new directions. Anyway our wiki has a page called page numbers that can serve as a starting point. It references the material mentioned above. You can, of course, add to it if you discover some new insight or perspective.
