Amazon US has got Pieter Aspe's first Pieter van In mystery at USD 1.99

Quote:
An ancient family name hides sinister secrets of love and betrayal, riches and revenge in the heart-pounding English-language debut by European crime sensation Pieter Aspe

The beautiful medieval architecture of Bruges belies the dark longings of her residents. When the wealthy and powerful Ludovic Degroof’s jewelry store is robbed, nothing is stolen, but the jewels have been dissolved in jars of aqua regia, an acid so strong that it can melt even gold. In the empty safe is a scrap of paper on which a strange square has been drawn.

At first, Inspector Van In pays little attention to the paper, focusing on the bizarre nature of the burglary. But when Degroof’s children begin to receive letters with this same enigmatic square, Van In and the beautiful new District Attorney, Hannelore Martens, find themselves engaged in solving the mystery of a complex web of Latin phrases, a baroness’ fallen family, and Degroof’s unsettling relationship with a hostage grandchild, who is being ransomed for a priceless collection of art.
I've not read any of his titles before but as it's set in Bruges I'm definitely interested!

Free on Amazon - A Kind of Dying by Frederic Lindsay

'Men vanish all the time; often because that's what they've chosen to do. So when he's sent to investigate a disappearance, Inspector Jim Meldrum begins to ask himself why the Chief Constable and so many of his colleagues are taking an interest in what appears to be a routine investigation. Wealthy John Bellman lived a quiet life out of the public eye. What makes his disappearance so important?

An unexpected call takes Meldrum to Oslo where a Norwegian policeman appears to have evidence that Bellman was connected to one of the most dangerous neo-Nazi groups to emerge since the fall of the Berlin wall.

In London, Bellman's daughter demands her own price of Meldrum to help in the search. From there, Meldrum's dogged pursuit of the truth will take him deep into a New England forest where the elements of Bellman's past come into violent collision. For the final unravelling, however, he has to look elsewhere. If he is to uncover the roots of a spreading evil Jim Meldrum must come home. To Edinburgh.'

I enjoyed the first several of that series. It's fascinating to learn about what goes on at the Body Farm.

Catriona McPherson's new stand alone novel is the Amazon Deal of the Day at USD 1.99

As she left it
Quote:
When she was twelve years old, Opal Jones escaped her mother’s endless drinking. Now, returning to their small Leeds cottage after her mum’s death, Opal feels like she’s gone back in time. Nosey Mrs. Pickess is still polishing her windows to a sparkle. Fishbo, Opal’s ancient music teacher, still plays trumpet with his band. And much to Opal’s delight, her favorite neighbor, Margaret Reid, still keeps an eye on things from the walk in front of her house.

But a tragedy has struck Mote Street. Margaret’s grandson, Craig, disappeared some ten years ago, and every day he’s not found, shame and sorrow settle deeper into the neighborhood’s forgotten corners. As the door she closed on her own dark past begins to open, Opal uncovers more secrets than she can bear about the people who were once her friends.
I've read her Dandy Gilver series and enjoyed them. They're set in 1920's Scotland and Dandy is a Private Detective. They probably could be considered 'cozy' mystery/murder.

This novel is not part of that series and is set in the present (from what I gather) and I guess it might not be as 'cozy'.

Available from Amazon Aus, US and Canada.

High Lonesome Road by Betsy Thornton

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Following her impressive debut, The Cowboy Rides Away (1996), Thornton triumphs in this sequel, which makes even minor characters memorable and firmly places them in the stark but weighted atmosphere of the Southwest desert. Chloe Newcombe, a victim's counselor for the Dudley, Ariz., police department, is reluctant to reconnect with bookmobile driver Erica Hill, because Erica was an old friend of Chloe's dead brother, James. Weeks later, after someone shoots Erica in her bookmobile, Chloe wonders if a phone call from her could have saved the woman's life. Feeling culpable, Chloe starts to investigate and discovers that Erica had been reaching out to many in her last days. Although the police are holding Erica's golden son, Troy, Chloe can't believe the teenager had anything to do with his mother's death. And Stuart Ross, the ponytailed defense attorney, didn't admit his past relationship with Erica, but that doesn't mean he killed her. The more Chloe digs, the more she realizes that the strong, free-spirited Erica antagonized--as well as intrigued--just about everyone she met. As Chloe closes in on the killer, she feels the strain of an earlier death she inadvertently participated in--committed by a man she once loved. The refusal of the author to neatly tie up that earlier event is one of the many strengths of this book. Its ability to succeed as both a mystery and character study is certainly another, and if Thornton, a victim's advocate in Bisbee, Ariz., can be persuaded to produce books more regularly, she could establish herself as a major new voice.

I find this series a somewhat strange experience !

I found the books rather slow, and didn't hold/grab me enough to finish them - but the BBC radio rendering I thought excellent, with a terrific cast, which "converted " me ... but of course being so good, made tackling the books again a bit redundant.

.....there are a couple of omnibuses of Inspector Rebus books, but can't find ebook versions of them, Kindle or ePub ?
Was going to query that on Ian Rankin's forum but means setting up yet another ID and password.
If anyone already has a login please ask for me.

I can't resist getting the first one (Knots and Crosses). I've heard of the series, but I've never actually read one. Now I shall. Perhaps I'll kick myself for not getting the lot, or perhaps, for me, it'll be a lucky escape!

It is a really, REALLY good series. One of my favourites. It has excellent character development as the series goes on. Rebus is a far from perfect protagonist - a flawed character in many ways.
