Receiving a kindle scribe direct from Amazon soon; how to setup to allow jailbreak?
Hi!
I have a replacement kindle scribe 64gb device arriving later this week. I'm not sure what firmware will be arriving, but I think I have a good chance that it will be an older version as the device will likely arrive refurbished. What can I do to BLOCK the updates until I get a chance to proceed with the jailbreak? I can run a hot spot through my android phone and perhaps through that install some firewall so that amazon's update servers are blocked, and just allow sign-in? And cut the hotspot connection the moment that the sign in is complete? Then turn on airplane mode the moment I can? Any suggestions? |

Does jailbreaking it prevent me from using th built in notebook writing and syncing features with Amazon ? I think there's a way to lock the software from future updates after jailbreaking?

No, you can still use all features, even with JB.
Yes, you can block updates with renameOTAbin |

Just got the Kindle today. Tried to follow the first step, but after turning on the Kindle and seeing the 'pick a language' screen, and hooking up to both a Ubuntu desktop and Mac laptop, I don't see any mount point where I can examine the version number in version.txt
Ideas? |

You need to pick language, and go until the screen that says “Login to Amazon” - do not login, connect to PC.

Спасибо!
Awesome! Wanted to get some guidance to make sure everything was legit. Appreciate your help and I'll tackle the jailbreak tomorrow. Luckily enough 15.16.1 is my version! Sounds like I don't need to do the firmware downgrade on step 17. Is 15.16.2 the latest version that works flawlessly with the jailbreak and koreader? I know they added some updates on the scribe notebook side of it recently. Would you keep it at 15.16.1 or a different version? Last edited by arooni; 12-15-2023 at 09:53 PM. |

Cool! Congrats!
Yes, 5.16.2.X is the last one so far where JB can be achieved. Also, nothing else works on newer FWs (KOReader, packages). |

I'm waiting for a replacement Kindle Scribe, is there a way to register not have it update to the latest firmware? because it ask for wifi info before anything else or you cannot start a session.
Anyone is optimistic about the latest firmware to be able to have KOreader working on it in no time? |

If you are lucky and you receive Kindle with Firmware less than or equal to 16.4.2, then see post #2.

I found a way to skip the first update. I'm on 5.16.1
I know that each official updates from amazon makes the device better in general and pen response, is there a way to update manually to 5.16.4.2 while offline? |

Did you mean 5.16.2 to 5.16.2.1.1 instead of 16.4.2?
The amazon site offers older firmwares but writes devices names next to it, I wonder if the - Kindle Paperwhite (7th Generation) 5.16.2.1.1 firmware is ok on the Kindle Scribe. Don't want to fuck up the device I just received. Also once on Koreader, can I use wifi as much as I feel like without having any software update from the device and put books on it wirelessly from calibre? Because it you can't I might simply just stay with the original firmware, which is pretty good as it is for reading comics and books. |
