Android sales up 886 percent in Q2 - Becomes largest smartphone platform in US

Quote:
The United States smart phone market grew 41% year on year. It is the largest smart phone market in the world by a significant margin, with 14.7 million units accounting for 23% of global shipments in Q2 2010. Android devices collectively represented a 34% share of the US market in the quarter, and with growth of 851% Android became the largest smart phone platform in the country.

That is ridiculous growth for any product and shows just how popular Android is becoming worldwide. Here are some of the interesting statistics Canalys has gathered:
* Symbian OS took 38% market share worldwide in Q2 (41% year-on-year growth)
* Android had 23% market share (884% year-on-year growth)
* BlackBerry OS took 18% share (41% year-on-year growth)
* iOS came in with 13% share (61% year-on-year growth)

That is some serious growth! And they haven't even started shipping tablets yet.

I don't have an Android phone but installed the developer tools today which includes an emulator. I'm impressed. I can see why it's so popular.

The link is not working for me. Dunno why. Sounds promising, though. Does the story say how Android is doing elsewhere in the world?

Here's the worldwide picture from a BBC article:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-10839034

Basically Symbian still way out in front, but Android with dramatic growth and sniffing at RIM's heels for the number two slot.

This is based on shipments for Q2 rather than sales, but the article notes that the sales do tend to match the shipment trends.

Very true. I guess the question I have stirring in the back of my mind is how Google is going to handle Android Apps on these tablets.

If there is not an easy transition, or access to these apps, I don't believe the Google tablet space will succeed.

Isn't this where Android 3 will come into play on release in October, with support for much higher resolutions and an improved interface? The Android API already allows for apps to adjust to multiple platforms sizes (scaling to a standard of small, medium and large screens and low, medium and high resolutions), though it relies on the app developers building in the support, of course.

It looks like there's a lot of work going on behind the scenes to make all this come together.

Wow this is quite impressive it looks like Android has passed up iPhone world wide. And is only 1% way from catching up to RIM.

Considering that 2.2 was released earlier this year, I'd be real surprised if 3.0 came out this year. I'm guessing a lot of tablets will come out with 2.1-2.2 with the promise of upgrading to 3.0. Regardless nobody knows what google has in store for Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread)

Samsung has been sending letters to individual developers informing them that their products do not work for larger format devices.
