I envision a future where everyone has chips implanted at a very young age that allow everyone to communicate instantly with every other person on the planet. Susie in San Francisco can allow her friend Ching Lan in China to see the Golden Gate through her eyes. In return, Ching Lan can share her view of the Great Wall with Susie. Their conversation won't be impaired by the fact that Ching Lan speaks no English and Susie speaks no Chinese because they'll be speaking over the Internet and Google Translate will have been perfected by the addition of nearly-perfect artificial intelligence. In fact, languages will not be an insurmountable obstacle anywhere because whenever people encounter others who don't speak their language, they'll simply shut up and communicate via their implanted chips.
When people want to work in a more traditional computer mode, they'll call up a screen and also a virtual keyboard if they like that only they can see. To them, the keyboard will seen physical. They'll be able to feel the keys because the chips will be feeding the tactile information directly into their brains. Naturally, most people will choose to forgo the keyboard and simple use their Dragon NaturallyThinking software that allows them to think their words onto the page. And because the implants will allow for the ultimate virtual reality experience, people will be able to enjoy sex with any other willing person on the planet. The only thing missing will some of the unintended consequences. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 11-24-2012 at 03:25 PM. |

Today I was finally was able to spend some personal time with Windows 8... Umm, all I can say is when I'm actually able to afford a new machine I think I'm going to install one of those hacks to bring back the start menu. I gave metro, or whatever they're calling it now, a shot and I just didn't like it. I could definitely see this interface being nice on a touchscreen, but with a mouse it's just crap.

There are many theories of time travel, but the one that I think is the most likely is the branching-universe theory. In that theory, every time you travel through time the timeline splits. In one timeline you did travel through time and in the other you did not. Also, when you arrive the timeline splits once again.
The advantage of this theory is that paradoxes (such as the grandfather paradox) are impossible. This is due to the fact that when you travel through time you can never return to your original timeline (where you didn't travel through time), and each trip cuts you off from the previous timeline you were on. Any changes you make won't affect you since your personal timeline (unlike the common timeline) is essentially a thread that starts at the point you first travelled through time and tracks all of your jumps until your current point in time. |

But that also means that your friends and family in the original timeline will never see you again.

A version of you would still be there, the one who didn't travel through time so your family and friends would not know that you had left. But the you that left would never be able to return to that timeline, but you could go back in time one minute and be in a timeline that is identical to the one at the point you arrived (which is before you left) except there's now an extra you there.

Star Wars and Star Trek both offer a different view of future ships. In Star Trek the ships tend to look new and shiny. Although there are some well-used ships, for the most part the ones we see are close to brand new and are kept that way. Plus, you rarely hear about used ships.
In Star Wars, the ships look like they are well used, more like our cars. One thing that struck me is the scene where The Millenium Falcon starts to malfuction and Han Solo hits something and it starts to work. Likewise is Princess Leia's comment to the effect that Solo's ship is a flying junkpile. I don't recall seeing that anywhere in Star Trek. |
