Thumbs up Free (DRM-free) Spin by Robert Charles Wilson [Award-Win Hard SF Astronomical Oddity]

Spin by US-born Canadian author Robert Charles Wilson (ISFDB, Wikipedia, SFE) is the 1st novel in his Spin trilogy of highly speculative hard science fiction novels involving the abrupt appearance of a strange barrier with odd astronomical effects, this installment introducing the suddenly changed Earth and people living on it, as well as the beginning of the discovery as to what the barrier is truly for, free courtesy of publisher Tor Books.

This is their featured eBook Club of the Month offer for November. This was nominated for quite a number of awards at the time and won the 2006 Hugo for Best Novel, as well as several international awards in translation some years later, according to ISFDB. Apparently SyFy is planning on making a miniseries based on it.

Currently free through November 7th directly @ the eBook Club's special promo page (DRM-free ePub & Mobi in exchange for newsletter signup with your valid email address; officially only available to Canada & the US due to geographic publishing rights restrictions)

If you'd like to follow along with the actual book club discussion, which sometimes features insights from the participating authors, it can be found via the usual tag on the Tor.com blog.

Description
SPIN is Robert Charles Wilson's Hugo Award-winning masterpiece—a stunning combination of a galactic "what if" and a small-scale, very human story.

One night in October when he was ten years old, Tyler Dupree stood in his back yard and watched the stars go out. They all flared into brilliance at once, then disappeared, replaced by a flat, empty black barrier. He and his best friends, Jason and Diane Lawton, had seen what became known as the Big Blackout. It would shape their lives.

The effect is worldwide. The sun is now a featureless disk—a heat source, rather than an astronomical object. The moon is gone, but tides remain. Not only have the world's artificial satellites fallen out of orbit, their recovered remains are pitted and aged, as though they'd been in space far longer than their known lifespans. As Tyler, Jason, and Diane grow up, a space probe reveals a bizarre truth: The barrier is artificial, generated by huge alien artifacts. Time is passing faster outside the barrier than inside—more than a hundred million years per year on Earth. At this rate, the death throes of the sun are only about forty years in our future.
