what "account" do l use to sign into android market?

It's not obvious to me.

I tried my google login and the kindle device address (@kindle.com), but kept getting the message that there was no "android phone" associated with the account.

What do I need to change to make this work for me?

In order to access the Market directly you must first jailbreak the Fire.

However, if you have an Android device with Market Access you can install ES File Explorer on it and backup any apps from the Market into a apk file which can be sideloaded onto the Fire (Sideloading Non-Amazon Apps).

Also, see post #5 of Would this work for G-Apps and Market without rooting?.

Instead of using the Android Market you will want to use the safe other markets like getjar, slideme, Panda apps, freewarelovers, and 1mobile market and of course the app developers sites themselves.

You can find a lot of good apps there without having to jailbreak/root your phone.

There is a fourum here about other alt app sites.
