Free novella from Endeavor Press: River of Bones by Jodi Cleghorn.

Quote:
It’s October 1974 and all is not well in the town of Elyora.

First the clocks stop.

And men in shiny suits turn up offering payment for the inconvenience.

Then the phone lines stop working.

And finally, the power goes out.

The trouble is, no one comes to explain that.

Dorothy Briggs, a local old lady, is disturbed by a blast of music and drawn towards the nearby river where she hears a voice - “You murdered my son, Dorothy Briggs” - and crumples to the floor.

Fast forward to December 2012.

Jo, Benny and Hal, members of the band Faunabate, have no idea what they’re in for when their car suddenly breaks down on the way to their first gig.

Their nearest town?

Elyora.

Upon arrival it quickly becomes clear that this is not your normal town.

Why are all the magazines dated at 1974?

Why have all of their clocks stopped?

And where exactly have all the people gone?

There are some towns you don't ever want to visit.

And Elyora is one of them.

Because not everyone gets out alive...

'River of Bones' is a fast-paced supernatural thriller perfect for fans of James Herbert and Stephen King. It was short-listed for an Aurealis Award in 2012.

I despaired of ever finding Robert Aickman's The Wine-Dark Sea at a discount and so used a 35% coupon to buy it on Kobo just now.

Of course, the above rant is only relevant to this thread if a discount on the book should suddenly appear here and I'm forced to set fire to my own pelvis.

A great book, a classic.

Here's a better cover to paste on, if you choose.

John Ajvide Lindqvist's Handling the Undead is currently $4.43 at Amazon (US).

Quote:
In his new novel, John Ajvide Lindqvist does for zombies what his previous novel, Let the Right One In, did for vampires.
Across Stockholm the power grid has gone crazy. In the morgue and in cemeteries, the recently deceased are waking up. One grandfather is alight with hope that his grandson will be returned, but one husband is aghast at what his adored wife has become.
A horror novel that transcends its genre by showing what the return of the dead might really mean to those who loved them.

I don't see that the above book is bargain-priced at all, according Amazon U.S.

If so, this is simply the normal, everyday price - even if the book is very good or is a real stinker.

If it's not a sale price, that's a very recent price drop on Handling the Undead; until yesterday its Kindle price hadn't gone below $8.89.

Possibly more appropriate for the Sci-Fi/Fantasy thread, but: Stephen King's The Wind Through the Keyhole is $4.99 at Amazon US, down from $8.54.

It's frustratingly hard to track Kindle prices using just Amazon; wish lists will show if the price is lower than when the item was added, but otherwise there's no way to tell. Fortunately, ereaderIQ tracks price history in the long term, so one can check whether a low price is new or permanent.

When the Darkness Falls, short stories by J. F. Gonzalez, is $.99.

Quote:
Originally released in 2006 in trade paperback, this, the author’s second full-length collection of stories, is finally available in a new trade paperback edition and in eBook for the first time. Within these pages you will find:

A nightmare in which an axe-wielding madman stalking the streets becomes reality for a young family trapped in their home during the height of a blizzard.

In a world ravaged by the living dead, one man's mission to find female companionship lands him more than he bargained for.

A magazine editor discovers that a deceased pulp writer's most notorious work is a warning of Lovecraftian nightmares yet to come on an unsuspecting world.

These are just a few of the samplings you'll find in this new major short story collection by the author of such novels as Bully, Survivor, and Clickers.

It's all here—Lovecraftian pulp horror, surreal SF, psychological and classic supernatural-based horror, and even a rare mainstream piece. This volume reprints material from obscure sources as well as mass-market anthologies.

Also included is a brand new story, "Finding the Flame." Like his previous collection, Old Ghosts and Other Revenants, this volume features stories across a wide spectrum, from the subtle to the extreme. So pull up a chair, flip the page, turn on the light and wait until...When the Darkness Falls.

Dread in the Beast by Charlee Jacob is $2.99 from Necro.

Quote:
DREAD IN THE BEAST used to be a novella about the goddess of waste and the king of wasters. Now it is a novel, stuffed full of the gruesome and horrible. Taken from the mythologies and histories of humankind, it follows the trail of the Mother Spririt of the worst that the world is capable of producing. From the catacombs of ancient Rome where a blasphemous sect twisted the message of the early Christians--to modern America with its obsession with violence, deities and saints and the reincarnations of beasts battle over sublime and profane, where the very reasons for existence for us all may lie in the unthinkable.
