There can be 1 to n 'screens' per page, depending on zoom level.

My 'page' was the entire 'file', not the whole book. My standard is 'chapter per file'

As always, there are exceptions .

It does seem to me that those determined to mimic paper books are going along the same lines as an automobile designer who tries to design cars that look and perform like horse and carts.

True, but a link to an endnote at the end of the entire book may be noticeably slower (especially on an older slower reader), since that will involve loading and parsing a different file.

Maybe, but then you could put all your book in a single file, and it would only make things slower (slower opening of the book, slower refreshing when changing font, etc.). So there's some kind of trade-off between avoiding much inter-file linking and avoiding large files.

It would be a fairly small book that can be placed in one file. There is a limit of less than 300K that is allowed for many eBook Readers do to their available RAM.
